Internships offer students an enriching experience in a live working environment and the opportunity to build rapport and grow networks with future employers and industry professionals.

Tristan Quilter and Stuart Faulkner undertook their internships at the company’s headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, last summer.

Both are studying BEng Mechanical Engineering at UWTSD’s Faculty of Architecture, Computing and Engineering and are now in their 3rd year (level 6).

The internship was in the Product Development, Body Engineering department at Aston Martin Lagonda.

Their role involved being able to execute material and component testing to support materials development, design verification for existing vehicles and vehicle launch.

The Key Responsibilities & Tasks were:

  • Support and execute physical, mechanical and climatic tests on components, trimmed components, roll stock materials and test plaques
  • Prepare test reports according to test standards and methods
  • To undertake specialist development projects, including;
  • Review of aesthetic finishes and associated test methods.
  • Finding methods to measure small changes in properties after test.
  • Development and prove out of new methods for testing aesthetic finishes.
  • Use the above learning to investigate how to improve performance of selected materials.
  • Collection and evaluation of waste material from an internal process.
  • Investigation of how the material could be re-used in another application.
  • Measurement of the properties of the material.
  • Tailoring the material in to a product and measurement of its performance in cars.
  • Use the above learning to find ways of productionising the re-use of the material.

At the end of the internship, Stuart and Tristan presented a summary of the investigative work which they had carried out to chief engineers and heads of department at Aston Martin.

Both students have been asked to continue the specialist work which they were undertaking with Aston Martin as the focus of their final year engineering projects (Major Projects).

Graham Howe, UWTSD’s Head of School of Engineering said: “The internships have enabled Tristian and Stuart to apply the knowledge learned in the lectures and modules on their programme to real world applications.  It has given them valuable work experience that will enhance their CVs and prepare them for their engineering careers following graduation. These internships are tremendously valuable to all our students and I’ve been delighted at the quality of work that has been produced and I am really excited and looking forward to seeing the outcome of this work.”
