Surface Pattern Design launches entrepreneurial initiative as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2019

22.11.2019

UWTSD has been celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 18 to 22) through a series of discussions and events bringing together industry partners, employers, students and lecturers to share expertise and knowledge in entrepreneurial learning. As one of many events this week, the University was pleased to launch Picture This 20 20 20, Surface Pattern Design’s latest entrepreneurial initiative – as part of the events taking place across the UK.

Swansea College of Art Final Year Surface Pattern Design (SPD) students have each produced an A3 limited edition of 20 Prints to sell for £20 each, as part of the 20 years of SPD celebrations that the programme will be showcasing over the next year. The 3rd year BA and 4th year MDes students already have one eye on their Degree Shows next May, and are taking this opportunity to launch their fundraising activities during Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Georgia McKie, Programme Director, BA(Hons)Surface Pattern Design  said: “Finding ourselves at the eve of 2020, with the 20th November falling right in the middle of entrepreneurship week, it seemed like the ideal time to host our launch event.  20 really is the magic number!”

The Picture This 20 20 20 launch Pop Up exhibition was held at Creative Bubble, Craddock Street, Swansea, on Wednesday November 20. The Pop Up was also open on Thursday 21st and again today (Friday 22nd) from 11am – 5pm.  Students intend to extend the initiative through their Instagram and Facebook pages, where they will be able to continue selling their beautiful work to the public.

Georgia added: “Prints have been produced in all manner of ways, showcasing the multidisciplinary skills of SPD students - Screen prints, Lino, Riso, Giclee… there will be something for everyone!  Students have been working in distinctly individual ways rather to a given theme.  They are offering a taste of what is to come next May, in a celebration of their design signatures and enterprising spirit.  You will find these perfect for your must have ‘insta-trending’ Gallery Walls; an unmissable opportunity to purchase some affordable art, perfectly timed and perfectly priced for Christmas we think!  Get your crisp new £20s at the ready, these are limited editions!”

Surface Pattern alumnus Harriet Popham has also contributed to the exhibition.  Harriet has returned as an Associate Artist in Residence to the programme and has been getting to know the students over the last few months.  She will be giving valuable advice on how she continues to work in similar ways to this, through UWTSD’s Pizza with a Pro scheme.

Georgia said: “Harriet is such an excellent advocate for creative enterprise, she sees opportunities and approaches them with such relish, and this is so inspiring for the next generation of our graduates coming through.  We boast such talented students, but without the confidence to take their work to the outside world there is always a risk that the degree show is where it ends for them.  Harriet is such a great example of where a little bit of confidence and risk can get you.  We create opportunities like this for our students so that they can demystify some of their preconceptions before they leave Uni.  By starting small, with a simple idea, done well, students can see the scope for sustaining their practice for their foreseeable futures!  We are exceptionally proud of Harriet and what she has achieved since graduating from Surface Pattern Design in 2014, and our students feel really honoured to have her exhibiting alongside them at this celebratory event!”
