UWTSD’s Professor Gary Bunt has been invited to present his research during an international webinar organised by the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies (AVACGIS) at George Mason University.

Professor Gary Bunt has been invited to present his research during an international webinar organised by the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies (AVACGIS) at George Mason University.

The Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies (AVACGIS) at George Mason University has organised a webinar series, entitled ‘Covid-19 and Muslim Religiosity', that explores the impact of Covid-19 on various dimensions of Muslim religious life in global perspective. Each webinar features a leading scholar whose work is starting to explore the intersection of Islam and the global pandemic with a view to exploring Covid-19’s impact on Muslim thought, theology, law, observance, and religious authority.

Over the last few months Professor Bunt has been undertaking research into online responses from Muslim communities associated with Covid-19 and will present his findings during this special webinar.  In his presentation, Professor Bunt will explore the impact of online Islamic pronouncements in the light of Covid-19, including how organisations and platforms respond in the light of continually shifting religious and media contexts. Professor Gary Bunt commented:

“I’m very much looking forward to taking part in this webinar. The unprecedented set of events associated with Covid-19 has brought a new focus on online religious activity in general and cyber Islamic environments in particular. This has included exploring how Muslim communities in the UK and elsewhere have utilised the internet on a number of levels, from religious activities to organising community responses. From streaming YouTube video from the empty Ka’aba in Mecca to delivery of Ramadan sermons through Instagram, many sectors of Muslim communities have embraced digital technologies, marking a new phase in online Islamic developments.

Through this discussion I hope we’ll have the opportunity to open up the question of whether responses to Covid-19 represent a turning point for Islam and Muslims on the Internet.”

The presentation, entitled “The Allah Algorithm: Interpreting Islamic Influencers Online Responses to Covid-19” will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time.   Further information regarding Professor Bunt’s webinar and how to join the session can be found on the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies (AVACGIS) at George Mason University website:
