UWTSD celebrates 10th anniversary of successful educational trips to Switzerland

A group of Level 5 International Travel and Tourism, Events, and International Festivals Management students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) have taken part in the University’s 10th Swiss trip.

UWTSD celebrates 10th anniversary of successful educational trips to Switzerland.

The trip to cities, lakes, mountains, and ski resorts across Switzerland is linked to their academic studies and provides an opportunity to undertake research related to their assignments as well as enabling them to put their learning into practice.

Jacqui Jones, Programme Manager for International Travel and Tourism, Events, and International Festivals Management at UWTSD said: “The trip brings their learning alive by focusing directly on International Travel Operations and the integrated Swiss Travel System and Sustainable Tourism and Events.

“It’s always a really popular trip with the students and prepares them for their final year studies focusing on Global Destinations, Resort Management, Attraction Management, Festivals and Sports Events.”

Destinations included the International Olympic Head Quarters in Lausanne to learn about the Olympic legacies and the village of Lauterbrunnen where students stayed  in a traditional Swiss chalet at which previous students have undertaken placements with Contiki Holidays.

Students also visited the 007 Spy World James Bond Experience at Piz Gloria to learn about the development and branding of the destination through film tourism. This included experiencing the interactive attractions and revolving restaurant as well as learning about the development plans and the new transport project designed to attract more visitors.

The trip also involved students undertaking their own excursions which they had researched and planned in order  to undertake their observational and experiential research for their project work. This is linked to their assignments and involves evaluating niche tourism and events in Switzerland.

During the trip, the students generated video footage from the alps for their recent ITT Future You Conference as well as content for their own assignments, VR projects and the University’s new immersive room in Swansea.

Next month a group of final year students will be travelling to Colorado for a two-week field trip funded by Taith, where they will be undertaking project work, visiting tourism and events organisations for behind-the-scenes industry visits and networking with alumni and industry leaders.

The students have also visited the Principality Stadium in Cardiff as guest of Compass and second year students are delivering their Live Events projects including the Cian Ducrott gig at the Patti, a Community Games Night, Live Event at Backpackers, and a Charity Gala Ball at Dylan Thomas.

They’re also helping to set up the City Centre Conference and registration for 4theRegion at the Arena on March 29.
