Owain Arwel Hughes celebrates Dylan Thomas’ centenary with a series of concerts


Orchestral conductor Owain Arwel Hughes will pay a musical tribute to Wales' preeminent poet, Dylan Thomas and will celebrate the centenary of his birth with two major performances in London and Wales.

The first of these, a star studded centenary gala, will take place at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank, London, on the eve of the iconic poet's birthday on Sunday October 26.

Hosted by actor, Griff Rhys Jones, the performance will feature the world premiere performances of three major new orchestral works by Welsh composers, and appearances by an array of Welsh celebrities, including Jonathan Pryce, Sian Phillips and musical theatre star John Owen Jones.

One week later, Owain Arwel Hughes will lead a second gala performance at the Halliwell Theatre on the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Carmarthen campus, which will feature the Welsh premiere of the new works, and additional music by Karl Jenkins and more. The performances are part of a major project supported by the Arts Council of Wales, in partnership with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

The concert at the Halliwell Theatre, Carmarthen takes places on Sunday, November 2nd and starts at 3pm.
