UWTSD BA Art and Design Students Commissioned to Create Trophies for a National Competition

Students at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) studying BA Art and Design have been commissioned to create and design trophies for ‘Gwobrau’r Selar’, an awards night for contemporary Welsh music bands and artists.

‘Gwobrau’r Selar’, are organized by contemporary Welsh music magazine 'Y Selar', and are nationally recognised. “The UWTSD students designing and creating the trophies gained professional work experience at a national level”, said Gwenllian Beynon, Programme Director for Art and Design and Art Practice.

Michelle Lennon, one of the students involved in creating the trophies said:

“I’d never done anything like that before and being involved in the process was a great experience. It was a huge honour and we were all so pleased to do it. We all agreed that we wanted to design an award that was young and different- something we would like to receive ourselves. It’s given us a great insight into what working for a real commission will be like. It was very different from being given a project from a tutor, knowing there was that pressure and that everyone was going to see the end product made it more realistic.”

Gwenllian Beynon added:

“Working on these trophies creates a contact to the professional world on a national level for these students. What’s really great about ‘Gwobrau’r Selar’ is that they are young and contemporary. This has been a ‘real life’ experience for the students, not just a brief which was created for them, it therefore presents them with a valuable insight into the working world.”

As well as this news, there are many other developments within the Faculty of Art and Design at the University. Connections between the University and Theatr Felinfach have led to students displaying their work in an exhibition at the theatre. The students worked with Theatr Felinfach during their Pantomime production, this led to them gaining the opportunity to showcase their work in a professional establishment.

Rhian Dafydd, Arts Council of Wales said:

“The link between Theatr Felinfach and UWTSD has existed for years and we are keen to maintain the relationship. It provides students with a platform and an opportunity to gain recognition for their work. It’s nice to see UWTSD promoting extra-curricular projects that expand students’ experiences.”

‘Gwobrau’r Selar’ will be held on Saturday February 21st 13.00pm-1.00am at the Students Union, Aberystwyth.
