UWTSD Joins Swansea’s Purple Flag Celebrations

Creative BubbleUniversity of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) Creative Bubble is to join Swansea’s celebration this weekend to mark the city being awarded Purple Flag status.

Purple Flag status is awarded to city centres that meet or surpass the standards of excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy. Swansea secured its Purple Flag earlier this year and to mark this achievement a series of events and activities have been organised on the 2, 3 and 4 of October.

Through its Creative Bubble, UWTSD will run two events during the Big Purple Flag Weekend.

On Friday 2 October there will be a free ‘VIP Art Pop-Up’ event in the Creative Bubble, based on Cradock Street in the city centre. UWTSD Surface Pattern Design students will host a special viewing of their work created within the University and during the summer break. In addition, there will be an opportunity for the public to take part in an interactive drawing session, responding to the work that they have seen.

On Saturday 3 October, the Creative Bubble has organised a free ‘Pop-Up Gig’, between 4pm and 5pm outside Derricks Records on Oxford Street. The gig is being managed by UWTSD students and graduates and will include three talented local musicians; Sally Robinson, Nathan Launchbury-Jones and Christian Sayers.

Lucy Beddall, Creative Bubble Coordinator, said: “Swansea offers a huge variety of cultural activity. UWTSD, through Creative Bubble, is thrilled to take part in the Purple Flag celebrations. It is an opportunity to share the work and talents of our students and celebrate the diverse creative heartbeat of Swansea. What a fantastic city to live, work or study in.”

Councillor Mark Child, a Cabinet Member of the City and County of Swansea, said: “This is the first Purple Flag Weekend we have run in Swansea, and with the support we have received, it promises to be a fantastic showcase of all the great things you can do on a night out in the city centre. We can't wait to see what Creative Bubble and others have put together.”

Creative Bubble is an arts-based initiative run by UWTSD and Swansea BID (Business Improvement District). It is run through a city-centre commercial unit on Cradock Street and brings together UWTSD students, graduates and partners to collaborate and create a series of street performances, art exhibitions, pop-up craft fairs, drop-in workshops and fashion shows across the city centre.

UWTSD’s new ALEX Design Exchange, on Alexandra Road, will also join other city-centre buildings that will be lit purple during the weekend.
