UWTSD Marks Dylan Day with the Release of Siân Phillips Concert Footage

To mark the inaugural International Dylan Thomas Day (14/05/15) the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is to release, for the first time, footage of legendary actress Siân Phillips discussing her thoughts on the poet and reading pieces his work.

The recording was made during UWTSD’s Dylan Thomas Gala Concert last June in St Mary’s Church, Swansea. It was one of many events that UWTSD organised to mark the centenary of Thomas’ birth in 2014.

During the concert, Siân Phillips, originally from Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, spoke to broadcaster Nicola Haywood-Thomas about her memories of Dylan Thomas. She then delighted the audience by reading many of Thomas’ letters and poems.

Siân Phillips said: “People talk about Dylan Thomas, his behaviour, and how he could be scandalous and difficult. I can only say that, as a child, my recollection is rather boring. Dylan Thomas was the perfect gent.”

The Gala concert also featured world-renown tenor Dennis O’Neill along with Pontarddulais Male Choir and students from UWTSD’s Wales International Academy of Voice (WIAV)

Professor Medwin Hughes, UWTSD Vice-Chancellor, said: “One of the key aims of our University is to celebrate the cultural heritage of our region. Therefore we are very pleased to join in the festivities for International Dylan Thomas Day and celebrate the life and work of a Swansea-born icon.”
