Vice-Chancellor Announces His Vision for the Future of Welsh Education

In a public lecture held on Thursday 26th March, Professor Medwin Hughes, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), presented his views on the implications of the several high profile policy reports published for the future of education in Wales.

Professor Hughes outlined UWTSD’s Educational Pledge during a lecture, entitled ‘The New Opportunity to Lead’. It will provided the University’s perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the Welsh education sector and invited discussion on collaboration between key agents in shaping the future school system and education workforce in Wales.

The lecture, the first in a series to be delivered by the Vice-Chancellor and Senior Officers at UWTSD over the coming months, was a response to the Review of Curriculum and Assessment Arrangements in Wales by Professor Graham Donaldson, the publication of the Teaching Tomorrow's Teachers Report by Professor John Furlong and the 'New Deal' for teachers in Wales published last week.

Details of the Educational Pledge are outlined in the document ‘The New Opportunity to Lead’.

Professor Hughes said: “Our aim at UWTSD is to work with our professional partners to create confident, reflective learning communities. We intend to create a guiding coalition of professionals who can lead systematic change and support a self-improving educational system.

“In addition to this we intend to adapt our expertise in the area of work-based professional learning and competency-based accreditation, developing innovative accredited professional programmes which will be delivered within a school setting. UWTSD will also build upon its traditional strengths as a centre for excellence for the development of bilingual and Welsh Medium provision, and equity in education.

“In order to further teacher education reform in Wales UWTSD has identified a number of key initiatives which form our Education Pledge. These initiatives are our stated public commitments to further the strategic priorities of the Government of Wales.”
