Webb Ellis Cup visits Lampeter as part of Rugby World Cup 2015 Trophy Tour

On Monday, June 29th, rugby’s greatest prize, the Webb Ellis Cup, visited Lampeter as part of the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour.

Launched on June 10th, with 100 days to go to the opening match, the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour will travel through Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Wales and England before arriving at Twickenham Stadium on September 18th ahead of the Opening Ceremony.

As part of the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David hosted a junior rugby tournament in Lampeter for local schools, organised by the Welsh Rugby Union and held at Lampeter Rugby Club.

The event gave local children the opportunity to take part in a friendly fun-filled tournament as well as giving them the chance to have their picture taken with rugby’s most coveted trophy.  The event was also open to the public and fans from across Ceredigion attended during the day.

With the University preparing to celebrate the 2015 /2016 season as the 150th anniversary since the first rugby match in Wales was played in Lampeter, it was apt that the Webb Ellis Cup visited the town as part of the trophy tour.

“We were delighted to host the rugby tournament and welcome the Webb Ellis Cup to Lampeter – the birthplace of rugby in Wales.  The 2015 / 2016 rugby season will mark 150 years since Rowland Williams, Vice-Principal at St David’s College, Lampeter - now the University of Wales Trinity Saint David - introduced the sport to Wales,” says the Venerable Randolph Thomas, Chair of the University Council.

“The University is planning a series of celebrations and will launch a programme of events at the start of the season in September.  In the meantime, both the tournament and the trophy visit helped raise awareness of Lampeter’s connection with the game whilst also allowing local enthusiasts the chance to see the historic cup.”

The journey throughout the UK and Ireland aims to engage fans and give them the opportunity to build unforgettable memories as part of their own Rugby World Cup 2015 story.

Rugby is at the heart of the Trophy Tour engaging with over 100 rugby clubs, organisations and rugby festivals, from grassroots to elite. In addition Host Cities, Match Venues, community and legacy programmes, sports events, stakeholder visits, Worldwide Partner activations and iconic landmarks will feature as part of the Trophy Tour with over 300 events programmed across the 100 day continuous tour.

With only months to go, the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour across the UK and Ireland will create hundreds of opportunities for fans to see the Webb Ellis Cup and tell their rugby story as they countdown to their own Tournament experience.
