New professional development course in basic Mandarin for UWTSD staff

Course starts Wednesday 17th November from 3pm to 5pm

For staff working with Chinese partner universities or teaching Chinese students, it’s useful to have some basic communication skills in Mandarin, not only to break the ice but also to help Chinese students connect with their new learning environment. With this in mind, the Confucius Institute is launching a brand-new course in basic Mandarin as a great opportunity for UWTSD staff.

Starting on 17 November this six-week course focuses on spoken Chinese with useful words and expressions for teaching, as well as combining lots of cultural insights into the lives of Chinese students. The course teaches the essentials of Mandarin, including:

  • pinyin, the Latin alphabet version of Chinese characters
  • tones, the key to pronunciation
  • conversation topics
  • phrases to use in email communications such as greetings and sign-offs.

A unique feature of the course is that on top of the two hours per week of Mandarin, staff joining the course will have additional opportunities to practice what they’ve learned each week with different members of the Confucius Institute teaching team to build confidence and practice pronunciation.

Staff who want to build on their Mandarin proficiency will be able to join the Chinese HSK 1 course in January, leading to an internationally recognised certification.
