A career in Ordnance Munitions and Explosives (OME) is challenging, stimulating and dynamic.

The OME Apprenticeship programmes have been developed in collaboration with employers to ensure that they meet current career progression needs in an industry that is central to maintaining national security now and in the future.

This innovative programme will help apprentices develop their professional and technical skills through a combination of university study and work-based learning.

The programme has been designed to ensure the fully competent OME Technician or Professional can work in a wide range of large or small, public or private organisations within this sector including defence, chemical, commercial, military, security, analytical or research.

Apprenticeships are a life long learning pathway with no age limit, so as long you are employed, not in full-time education and over 18 you can apply.

Degree apprenticeship starts at Level 4, however, relevant previous experience/qualifications will be taken into account. You will study part-time around your work commitments, and the programme will be for 2-4 years.

The programme is Government funded and you will be entitled to a wage, statutory holidays and paid time off to study.

Apprentices must be in relevant employment, but a degree apprenticeship is suitable for all industry sectors and business sizes.

Apprentices must be eligible to work in the UK and receive a minimum salary of at least £12,000 per annum.

If you are self-employed in Wales you can also apply.

What you will learn

You can forge your future career in one of five OME apprenticeship pathways delivered in UWTSD:

  • Technical, Research and Development
  • Safety
  • Manufacturing and Processing
  • Breakdown and Disposal
  • Test and Evaluation

You will be encouraged to register as student members of the IExpE and completion of the Apprenticeship will be a significant contributing factor in obtaining professional registration with IExpE or other engineering and scientific Institutions. 

The full Degree Apprenticeship takes 5 years to complete, with off the job training taking place on a block release basis in the University’s IQ Building on the new SA1 Campus in Swansea.

Further information

  • English and Mathematics level 2 (GCSE A*-C, 4-8 or equivalent) and a level 3 qualification (A level, BTech, Diploma or equivalent) is the usual minimum entry requirement.  

  • Modules are assessed in a variety of ways including traditional examinations, coursework, practical activities, group and individual presentations, all of which are designed to equip students with the experience and skills needed as they move forward in their studies and their careers.
