Garidel (1715)

Pierre Joseph Garidel

Devoted to the wild plants of Provenance, Histoire des plantes qui naissent aux environs d'Aix et dans plusieurs autres endroits de la Provence stresses the medicinal value of local native plants, championing their superiority over increasingly popular modern drugs. The illustrations in the work are a good example of art meeting science halfway. One plate, for instance, not only gives us a botanically sound drawing of a barren strawberry, but also has it floating strangely in mid air above a romantic landscape. Plate 39 shows Garidella, named in the author’s honour because he was the first to record it.
