The Annunciation to Mary by the Angel Gabriel

The Annunciation to Mary by the Angel Gabriel. Matins. This is the first subject in the programme of illustrations for the Hours of the Virgin. Mary is shown holding a book, a symbol of her wisdom. In the top left corner is the image of God the Father, and the dove representing the Holy Spirit is shown being directed on beams of light to Mary’s eyes. The medieval understanding of the incarnation was that Mary conceived ‘by sight’.
