Mr Andrew Hawke BA

Managing Editor, Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru

Tel: 01970 631012

He is responsible for Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru (the University of Wales Dictionary of the Welsh Language) project and the team of seven (currently six) who work on it.

He spent nearly three years working on research towards an historical dictionary of Cornish before being appointed Assistant Editor on Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru, the University of Wales Dictionary of the Welsh Language.

Alongside his editorial work, he developed a computer system to automatically typeset the Dictionary text from M onwards and organised the retro digitisation of the earlier volumes, gaining promotion as Assistant Editor and Systems Manager and becoming Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Dictionary in 2008.

He led a project to convert the Dictionary text to XML and introduced a new computer system (iLex) to edit it. This led to the development of GPC Online, a digital version of the Web Dictionary launched in 2014, with Android and iOS apps following in 2016.

With the aid of a grant from the Welsh Government, he led the development in 2018–19 of ‘GPC+’, a crowdsourcing pilot project to transcribe some of the Dictionary’s citation slips into a digital database.

His main academic responsibility is to edit the final text of the Dictionary as new articles are created and old articles updated.

He was promoted to Reader by the University of Wales in 2015.

He advises the Welsh Government on the linguistic infrastructure of the Welsh language as part of the Cymraeg 2050 Welsh language strategy and advises a number of bodies and organizations on lexicographic, orthographic, grammatical, &c., matters, and serves on a number of committees.
