Lecturer in Construction: Digital Technologies, BIM, Studio tutor.

  • Gavin is a chartered architect with over 20 years’ experience within the construction industry having gained experience in both the public and private sector on a wide variety of projects.
  • Prior to joining UWTSD in 2019, Gavin held the role as Projects Design & Development's Operational Manager within Cardiff Council and led the multi-disciplinary team of consultants that provided the 'in house' design and construction management services for the authority.
  • Gavin has worked on a variety of projects from small scale domestic to large multimillion pound projects. He has managed design teams on projects of a variety of scales and complexities; in sectors that include education, leisure, commercial, residential and conservation.
  • Gavin is an active member of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales and was recently elected as RSAW President 2021-23 and position at council for the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects).
  • With a multidiscipline background he currently delivers teaching across Programmes within Architecture and the Built environment, offering specialism in architectural design, BIM, and use of digital technologies.
  • Gavin is an advocate of greater cohesion between academia and professional practice and as such has previously taken part in the RSAW mentoring scheme for the Welsh School of Architecture and has also been a visiting critic for Birmingham School of Architecture at undergraduate Part1 and postgraduate level Part 2. He was also Practice mentor at Cardiff Council for employees undertaking RIBA part 3 studies, reviewing professional logs and ensuring staff gain valuable experience within the workplace across the RIBA stages of work.
  • Held board position on SEWSCAP South East Wales public sector procurement body and managed consultancy commissions through Welsh Government NPS Framework for Cardiff Council.

  • As a committee member and former Chair of Design Circle RSAW South, Gavin has been actively involved in many local research initiatives promoting the value of architects and architecture in Wales. He has presented at RSAW conference and many local networking events within the region.
  • Current research for Design Circle relates to the Metro Urban Density initiative, investigating the potential impact of the South Wales Regional Metro. The research aims to develop a vision for a TAN document that enables local authority to focus on ensuring the quality of the built environment in the communities in and around metro stations.
  • Optimized Retrofit Pathfinder Project – Training and Skills Advisory Group member: Involvement in this Project brings forward opportunities for the university to expand the student offer and be a lead party in evolving skills across the construction sector.
  • Academic Lead for Smart Partnership with BIM and Digitalization of the UWTSD Estate. This project developed from the Masters module – Construction Technology and BIM. An emerging sector within the in construction industry, BIM for Facilities Management.
  • Chartered Architect with considerable experience in practice. Leading a large multidisciplinary consultancy with experience of all elements of the RIBA work stages.
  • Extensive experience of the holistic processes involved in construction from inception to completion and including ongoing maintenance in the whole life cycle of the asset.
  • Experience in Public sector delivery of 21st Century Schools programme, including with BREEAM Excellent & BIM Level 2 certification.
  • Procurement Framework management and delivery including NPS & SEWSCAP.
  • BRE trained Building Information Modelling BIM accredited professional.
  • ILM Management, Innovation and Problem Solving.
  • IOSH qualified Managing Safely in Construction.
  • CSCS Card Holder.
  • As a chartered architect with considerable experience in practice and running a business, Gavin now practices in partnership in Cardiff on small domestic projects.
  • Working with Deign Circle RSAW South on grant assisted projects has allowed a wealth of knowledge on attaining financial support for projects through sponsorship and other means.
