Welsh Opportunities at UWTSD

UWTSD is a naturally bilingual University, where Welsh and English coexist in harmony. A high percentage of our staff and students across our campuses can speak Welsh and it is therefore possible for Welsh speakers to receive support through the medium of Welsh in all aspects of student life here. We are also very proud to support any student who wishes to learn Welsh or develop their Welsh-language skills during their time at the University.

I’ve made so many new friends by choosing to study through the medium of Welsh. There is a close-knit community of students and we get loads of new experiences including nights out, attending inter-col and trips abroad.

Welsh Medium and Bilingual Courses

Here at UWTSD we have a range of Welsh medium and bilingual courses across our campuses. Perhaps you haven’t considered studying for your degree or part of your degree program through the medium of Welsh until now, or perhaps you don’t feel confident about studying your program entirely through the medium of Welsh. Don’t worry, you are in good hands. You will get support from the University throughout your studies, you won’t be alone.

Think of the doors that will open for you as graduates if you have studied at least part of your degree program through the medium of Welsh!

Scholarships and Bursaries

  • Students at UWTSD who take Welsh-medium or bilingual undergraduate courses or modules have a special opportunity to obtain financial support from the University and Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

  • £50 is awarded for every 10 credits successfully completed by an undergraduate student through the medium of Welsh/bilingually.

  • Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol awards a number of scholarships to students who study specific courses partly, or entirely, through the medium of Welsh.

UWTSD plays a key role in providing Welsh-medium higher education and has an active Branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. The Branch organises a range of academic and social events for staff and students, from the annual lecture, conferences, freshers events and annual dinner, to the social choir and informal chats for Welsh learners. In addition, the Branch offers linguistic and financial support to Welsh-speaking students.

I was a bit unsure through the medium of English so to have the opportunity to study the BA Perfformio course through the medium of Welsh is a privilege. In addition, the scholarships offered by Coleg Cymraeg provide a huge boost to students studying in Welsh.
