Lampeter can boast long sporting traditions as legend has it that a member of St David’s College staff brought rugby to Wales and Lampeter Town Rugby Football Club was one of the Founder members of the Welsh Rugby Union in 1881.

Rugby continues to be played here, but alongside a range of different sports and activities, many of which would not even have been recognised then. Popular student sports include football, hockey, fencing, archery, martial arts such as Jiu-Jitsu and Tae-Kwando, and outwards bounds activities.

Indoor sports facilities include

Multi-purpose sports hall with badminton courts

  • Squash court
  • Dance studio
  • Multigym with weight-training equipment

For outdoor sports

  • Tennis courts
  • Cricket field
  • Football and rugby pitches

Students have free access to the local swimming pool during student sessions or can use it as a member of the public at other times. In addition, the modern leisure centre nearby provides a fitness suite and sports hall where a wide range of organised classes and more informal activities are offered.

For less formal outdoor pursuits, students are spoilt for choice. Within easy driving distance are the Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia and Pembrokeshire National Parks, the last two with excellent climbing. On the doorstep are the Cambrian Mountains (sometimes referred to as Britain’s “forgotten National Park”) with deeply cut wooded valleys and gorges, interspersed with vast areas of unpopulated and stunning moorland scenery.

The mountains, along with the nearby coast of Cardigan Bay, provide unrivalled opportunities for walking, canoeing, wind sailing, surfing, caving, or simply getting away from it all. Other popular past times include riding, mountain biking, and wildlife watching.
