Taster Days at Swansea College of Art UWTSD are an opportunity to meet with current students, tour our fantastic facilities and take part in a hands-on workshop that will give a taste of the teaching practice within our courses. The Academic Staff will be available to answer individual questions and attendees are very welcome to bring along examples of their own work to receive informal portfolio guidance.

The workshop has been created to give students an introduction into this multifaceted, exciting and fast moving subject. From the outset, we will consider what advertising actually is in 2018 and we will also look at the importance of communicating messages to key audiences. The session is informative and fun and includes an exciting workshop where students will have the opportunity to work in teams and share ideas. There’s also a tour of our facilities so you can familiarise yourself with what we can offer at Swansea College of Art. Design your own Hot Wheels car (equipment supplied, Automotive Studio)

Introduction to car design drawing & sketch rendering techniques. Then design your own with one to one guidance.

A chance to have a go with a range of animation techniques and in both 2D and 3D formats. Use pre-set rigs in Maya to add facial expression and body language and believable motion(s) in 3D scenes.

Using a range of design techniques and software everyone will have a chance to create characters, tools/weapons and environments within a live VR game experience.

Learn how to compose and design sophisticated sound effects, cinematic textures, and evolving soundscapes in the studio for use in films, apps, games and many applied sound production scenarios.

Create a 3D audio-rich interactive game using the latest industry standard game engines. Students will get an opportunity to implement sound effects, background/atmospheric music and soundtracks and to embed them in a game level.

A practical workshop introducing materials and making in 3D which could include Glass, Ceramics or jewellery.

Memory and Storytelling: Creating an audience: Film Festival trailer

Learn how to compose and design sophisticated storytelling techniques using a variety of approaches. Create a series of trailers for the upcoming Copper Coast International Film Festival. 

Drawing workshop using the idea of free running and exploring space in terms of sound and vision.

This workshop will introduce you to methods of making tools in order to make marks as drawing.

Individual and collaborative drawings will be made as experimental responses. This will take place in a Foundations open studio environment.

This workshop will introduce you to decorative and surface treatments to glass and investigate its use in an Architectural context. This is a practical workshop within which you will produce glass samples to take away at the end of the session.

Attendees for our Taster Day on the BA Graphic Design will have the opportunity to meet with current students, tour our fantastic facilities and take part in a hands-on exercise that will give a taste of the teaching practice within our course. The Academic Staff will be available to answer individual questions and attendees are very welcome to bring along examples of their own work to receive informal portfolio guidance.

We will supply all materials and no previous experience of Graphic Design is necessary. This is simple and fun introduction to the BA Graphic Design course that could possibly start the journey towards this creative career choice.

The workshop is an introduction to one of the most direct forms of visual communication. We look briefly at the diverse nature of contemporary illustration and its presence in the things of everyday life: newspapers, magazines, books, graphic novels, animation, game design, on CD sleeves and book jackets, posters, websites, clothing and on the packaging of consumer products. At this fun and creative workshop we will play with image making and visual storytelling. There will also be a tour of our studios and facilities, where lots of student work is on display. If you love drawing and think you may want a career in illustration, this Taster Day is for you! 

Following the practice of Jacques Lecoq, students will use Neutral Mask training techniques to explore their physical relationship with the outside world. These techniques are used throughout the theatre and film industry to develop physical blueprints for computer animated characters and to help actors prepare for green screen filming. This performance training will develop a performers readiness to create new and inspired bodily mannerisms for stage and screen.

Using a range of empathy modelling techniques to consider everyday design challenges. The session is informative and fun and includes an exciting workshop where students will have the opportunity to realise other people’s disabilities, which they may acquire through the natural ageing process! Basic introduction to 3D CAD modelling environment, an opportunity to play and model with industry standard CAD software and 3D printing.

Using the tricks of perspective to develop an extended set. Students will get hands on experience of fusing together two or more paper based images, matching the content to create new ideas for an extended set. All materials, resources and tuition will be provided. 

Students will be provided with a script extract and the chance to construct their own model set idea. These set maquettes will be lit creatively, photographed close up and pieced together to develop a visual storyboard.
