This presentation will set out the case for creating a more equitable education system in Wales. Its central argument will be that traditional interpretations of Wales as a relatively classless nation where social mobility is achievable by all, are increasingly at odds with the reality of a nation where nearly half of its citizens live in or close to poverty and where educational opportunities and achievement are highly stratified. It will suggest that contributing to overcoming this situation should be part of the core mission of a university such as UWTSD and that establishing and sustaining The Wales Centre for Equity in Education is an important contribution to this. The presentation will, thereby, set the context for the other papers in this session.
