Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives people the right to request information from the University and other public sector bodies. The Act aims to promote a culture of transparency and accountability amongst all public sector bodies and therefore facilitate better public understanding of how public authorities carry out their duties and how they spend public money.

Follow the following steps if you wish to request information about the University:

  • If you wish to access personal information/personal data which may be held by the University please see the section on Data Protection at UWTSD or complete a Subject Access Request Form.
  • If you wish to request other information, please first check to see if the information you require is already published through the UWTSD Publication Scheme
  • If the information is not already published and you wish to make a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 or Environmental Information Regulations 2004 please email or alternatively write to:

The Data Protection Officer

Requesting Information

Your freedom of information request should include:

  • Your name.
  • The address to which you would like the response to be sent (email or postal address)
  • A detailed description of the information you require.
  • The format in which you would prefer to receive the information, for example: in Welsh-medium, in a spreadsheet, information in Braille or in large print.

The University aims to respond to requests within the statutory timeframe of 20 working days. The  University’s Data Protection Officer may contact you to clarify your request. If clarification has been sought, the 20 working day time period will be suspended until clarification is received from you.

The Freedom of Information Act defines a number of exemptions which may prevent the release of the information you have requested. These are explained in detail on the Information Commissioners Office Website

Where the University decides it is necessary to apply any of these exemptions, you will receive an explanation, quoting the relevant exemption, and an explanation of your rights of appeal.

The University reserves the right to refuse any vexatious or repeated requests. This may include repeated requests from the same person, or from a number of people apparently working in concert, asking for the same information, or making requests which are intended to disrupt the University’s work.

The Freedom of Information Review and Appeal Process

If upon receiving a response to a written request for information, you are dissatisfied with the outcome, you are entitled initially to request a review of the response.  All reviews must be made in writing to:

The Data Protection Officer
University of Wales Trinity Saint David
Swansea Business Campus
High Street,
Swansea, SA1 1NE

Or by e-mail.

The review is conducted by a senior UWTSD member of staff (“the reviewer”)

In order to progress your review as quickly as possible, please quote the request reference number  (F20/xx) and the date of your original request, as well as details of why you are requesting the review.  Please include full contact details including a phone number where possible, in case we need to contact you during the review process.  Receipt of your review will be acknowledged in writing. Following the review, you will be provided with a response from the reviewer containing the outcome and subsequent actions where appropriate as taken by UWTSD

If you are not content with the outcome of the review, you have the right to appeal directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at: -
