Huw Edwards, a researcher on the D Prof programme, has been awarded the MBE in the New Year Honours for services to music and charity with Monmouth Male Voice Choir – Cor Meibion Mynwy.

Wearing a dinner jacket and blue-and-yellow bow tie. Huw Edwards smiles towards the camera.

Speaking after the Honours List was announced, Huw said: “It was quite a surprise to hear about this nomination, but the honour deserves to be shared by everyone involved in the Monmouth Male Voice Choir – Cor Meibion Mynwy.”

Huw is currently on the second year of the Doctoral Programme in Professional Practice. His research centres on the time he was Labour Member of Parliament for Monmouth and the passing of the Government of Wales Act which established the National Assembly for Wales.

“The D Prof programme is a wonderful opportunity to develop my interest in the development of devolution in Wales,” he added.

“I was fortunate to be amongst the MPs involved in the passing the legislation that eventually brought democratic devolution to Wales. Through my research at UWTSD I have developed a real interest in all those MPs from different parties going back to the 1880s who campaigned for devolution but never lived to see it become a reality.”

Huw grew up in a Welsh family in London. After studying at Manchester and York, he became a university lecturer in social policy working at Sheffield, London South Bank, Manchester Met, and Brighton. He was first elected to Parliament in an historic Monmouth by-election in 1991 and served for nine years as Labour MP for Monmouth.

He now works with universities running training courses and one-to-one coaching on how researchers can give their work a policy focus and promote it to policy makers as universities prepare for Ref 2029.

Huw said: “I’ve been fortunate to have had two main careers, as a university lecturer and MP, which I can now bring together to support university researchers on impact and policy engagement while also doing my own research at UWTSD on the parliamentary history of devolution in Wales.”
