Fflur Davies is the winner of the Stuart Burrows Award at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s graduation ceremony, for her contribution to the Performing Arts through the medium of Welsh.

Fflur decided to study BA Perfformio (Performance) at UWTSD’s Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts as she was eager to remain in Wales to study and perform through the medium of Welsh. She said:

“The fact that it was only a two year course was a major attraction for me, as I had taken a year out of education due to Covid.”

One of Fflur’s favourite things about the course was the fun they had as a group on a daily basis, and that she had been very lucky to meet and make lifelong friends there. Fflur feels that the course has succeeded in shaping her as a performer and that she has received a very solid foundation from the tutors on the course.

During her time at University, Fflur learnt a variety of different performance-related skills including acting and singing, as well as communication skills and building confidence on stage. She said:

“I use the skills on a daily basis, and learning about them has been beneficial to me as a performer, and I certainly feel much more confident after receiving two years of training at UWTSD.”

Fflur said, the course lecturers were extremely supportive:

“It has been a pleasure to work with them during my time at the University. I owe them a great deal and I am extremely appreciative of the support I have received from them. ”

While at University, Fflur competed in the Urdd Bryn Terfel Scholarship, and acknowledged that the course had helped her prepare for the competition. She was also fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Ohio with her course back in February – an experience that will stay in the memory forever. She added:

“As a performer, the course encouraged us to discover valuable skills that have been of great benefit to me moving forward in the performance world.”

Eilir Owen Griffiths, Director of the Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts is extremely proud of Fflur’s success. He said:

“During her time studying Fflur threw herself completely into the degree. She worked consistently and developed significantly during her time. Her performance of Salieri in ‘Amadeus’ was outstanding. She is fully deserving of this year’s award. And I wish her every success in the future. ”

Fflur recognises that winning the Stuart Burrows Award is a privilege for her personally, and is pleased that all the hard work over the last two years has paid off. She will use the Stuart Burrows Award money to help her develop her performance skills by paying for additional private lessons. For those wishing to follow in Fflur’s footsteps, she says:

“Don’t give up! I have been competing in the National Eisteddfodau and performing since I was in year 3, and I can count on one hand the number of times I have won. For me personally, being ‘wronged’, as my mother would say, has taught me a lot more than winning, and has made me a strong performer who isn’t concerned about negative feedback. Believe in yourself and don’t give up!”
