Emergency Notices

UPDATE: Extreme Heat Warning

The Met Office has issued heat alerts for parts of the UK this week, with very high temperatures forecast across all our campus locations.

We have convened the Incident Response Team and are meeting regularly to review the situation.

The University plans to remain open during this period but will keep monitoring the situation and will provide updates via email.

Staff who may require making changes to their normal working arrangements should discuss with their line manager in the first instance.

Birmingham Graduation

Colleagues travelling to and from the Birmingham graduation ceremonies should avoid doing so during peak temperatures.

There will be air conditioning and plenty of drinking water and support during the event.

If You Feel Unwell

If you feel unwell due to the heat, move to a cooler place, rest, and drink water. If symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, confusion or severe tiredness persist, seek medical advice.

Advice From Your Local Pharmacy

Your local pharmacy can provide advice on managing heat-related symptoms, dehydration, heat exhaustion, sunburn, and minor illnesses that may be made worse by hot weather. Pharmacists can also advise when further medical treatment may be needed.

Further Advice

The UK Government has issued Beat the Heat and Public Health Wales have issued guidance on how to stay safe in such conditions, including:

  • Avoid physical activity at peak temperatures
  • keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun
  • drink plenty of fluids and limit your alcohol intake
  • check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you
  • know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them
  • Try to avoid direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm when UV levels are highest
  • If you are going out during this time, cover up with suitable clothing, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply sunscreen liberally and re-apply frequently
