UWTSD lecturer re-ignites her interest in research by studying for an MA in Professional Practice
A lecturer from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has re-ignited her interest in research by returning to study for an MA in Professional Practice.
Kara Lewis, Rhagoriaith Lecturer and Project Manager, decided to study the MA in Professional Practice course under the auspices of the University’s Welsh Academy for Professional Practice and Applied Research. She said:
“Completing the course has reignited my interest in research, and has given me an opportunity to delve deeper into topics relevant to my profession and also new fields. Although it was hard work, and an investment of time, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was an opportunity for me to do something for myself and to develop myself as well. Meeting the programme lecturers and other students also expanded my network.”
Kara feels that studying this qualification “has given me much more confidence to contribute more widely in my workplace. The studies have developed my skill set, and broadened my horizons. Today’s workforce is expected to be very flexible. I feel I can confidently contribute to more aspects of the institution now, with theory, but more importantly, with experience because of the programme.”
She describes the course as “an exceptionally hands-on programme, and I was able to implement everything immediately. It’s a good mix of theory and practice. There are marketing, project management and mentoring courses, and much more.
“I can’t credit the staff enough – they were incredibly supportive, and the flexible and practical nature of the course meant I could both work and study. I thoroughly enjoyed the research project. The research method modules prepared me for the dissertations, but also to continue to do action research in my workplace.”
Kara was able to move her research forward immediately after she finished the course. She added:
“I looked at digital learning during lockdown, and the research findings informed the provision based on the research to improve our learning and teaching and the student experience.
“Conducting action research is an integral part of my work now, and I’m constantly researching the most recent developments in our field, and experimenting, monitoring and improving.”
Lowri Harris, Course Coordinator said:
“Kara developed immensely in terms of her confidence in conducting research relevant to her work, and it was a privilege to support her through her studies. The research she conducted has influenced her work and her students, which is the main intention of studying under our programme. I’m sure this is the beginning of a positive experience in research for Kara, and that we’ll hear a lot more from her within the field. ”
In encouraging others to study the programme, Kara would recommend to the students “to not be afraid to experiment with research methods that are new to you – this will strengthen any future research you undertake in the workplace. Choose a topic that interests you. You will live with the research for quite a long time! If you enjoy it, then all the reading, research, interpretation and presentation will be easier, and a very positive and satisfying experience.”
