Introduction

As an Illustration student, you will enjoy access to both digital and traditional facilities to help you develop your practice. Our bespoke and shared workshops and studios are run by expert technical staff who will support your creative and technical development.

Facilities include:

  • Three lively Illustration Studios.

  • Printmaking studio for Lino, Screenprint, Etching & Collagraph.

  • Letterpress studio with four Adana letterpress machines and bookmaking equipment.

  • Risograph Printing

  • Laser cutter

  • A dedicated digital illustration suite with iMacs, Wacom tablets and Cintiq screens.

  • Key software packages such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and After Effects.

  • An extensive collection of printed resources, books and journals.

  • A comprehensive electronic resource-base providing thousands of online e-journals and e-books.

Illustration Studios

Each year group has their own dedicated Illustration studio space. These are used for the delivery of core teaching and they also function as a creative workspace that students can use any time outside of lectures.

Mac Studio

Our dedicated digital Illustration Mac Suite is equipped with iMacs, Wacom Tablets and Cintiq screens with access to the full Creative Cloud. This includes key industry software packages such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and After Effects.

Life Drawing Studio

We use a dedicated Life Drawing room for you to study and draw the live human form. We use professional models to allow our Illustration students to study anatomy, proportions, shapes, light and shadow from different angles and through a broad variety of creative approaches.

Letterpress Studio

In our Swansea College of Art Letterpress Workshop, you can explore traditional letterpress techniques with moveable type and book making equipment. This is supported by technicians who will help you realise these traditional, craft-based outcomes.

Risograph Studio

Risograph printing blends screen printing aesthetics with photocopier mechanics. With technical guidance from our specialist staff, you will create bold and unique prints through a process that uses layered images and vibrant coloured inks.

Printmaking Studio

Our very well-equipped Printmaking Studio supports a range of processes from Lino, Screenprint and Etching to Collagraph and Adana letterpress.

Photography Studio and Media Equipment

Students can explore lighting, composition and storytelling techniques through access to the Swansea College of Art Photography Lighting Studio. This also includes access to cameras, video equipment, green screen, and portable lighting for photography and moving image work.

Large Format Printing and Digital Fabrication

Facilities include large-format printers and specialist equipment such as laser cutting, allowing you to expand your practice into spatial, physical, and experimental design outcomes.

Shared Workshops & Cross-Disciplinary Access

You’ll benefit from shared access to workshops from across the art school, which includes 3D printing, wood, glass and metal work, all of which encourages interdisciplinary experimentation and a balance between traditional craft and contemporary design practice.

Y Fforwm Library

Our modern, purpose-built library located at the UWTSD waterfront Innovation Quarter in SA1. It holds an extensive collection of printed resources, books and journals, much of which are also accessible through a comprehensive electronic resource-base, providing thousands of online e-journals and e-books.

Exhibition space

Stiwdio Griffith

Stiwdio Griffith is the dedicated, professional gallery and exhibition space at Swansea College of Art, located within our Dynevor Campus. It provides a formal environment for undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. students to exhibit their work in a professional public context.

UWTSD Immersive Room

A state-of-the-art virtual and augmented reality learning space located in SA1. It features 18 metres of industry-leading LED display panels wrapped across three large video walls to simulate high-definition, realistic environments. This provides an immersive viewing experience for animation, visual effects (VFX), film and digital media.

Shared Access

Access to other areas of the Faculty is arranged through workshops, however, Swansea College of Art has a policy of allowing students shared access to all of our facilities.
