Skills Competition Wales aims to raise the profile of skills in Wales and offers students, trainees, and apprentices in Wales a chance to challenge, benchmark and raise their skills by taking part in competitions across a range of sectors.

From an open call to students currently studying toward a level 2 or 3 qualification, 10 finalists from Cardiff and the Vale, Llandrillo Menai, Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, Gower College Swansea, Neath Port Talbot College, Coleg y Cymoedd and Coleg Gwen were selected to exhibit their photographic work, responding to the theme of ‘A Portrait of Wales’.

The selected finalists were invited to exhibit their photographic work at Swansea College of Art’s state of the gallery space, Stiwdio Griffith and were judged by Sian Addicott, Director of Ffotogallery and Jon Plimmer of GSD Media UK.

After the judging took place, students participated in a workshop with artist and technician demonstrator, Dafydd Williams, exploring 5 x 4 portraiture.

Ryan Moule, Head of Undergraduate Photographic Studies at UWTSD said: “Congratulations to Elis Jones from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor on winning this prestigious award and for all who contributed to making this event such a success.”

The finalists of Skills Competition Wales will have the opportunity to compete in the national and international competitions of WorldSkills UK, EuroSkills and WorldSkills International, subject to a further round of applications.

Funded by the Welsh Government and run by a dedicated network of colleges, work-based learning providers and employer-led organisations, it consists of a series of local skills competitions, aligned to WorldSkills and the needs of the Welsh economy.

The competitions are free to enter and typically run between January and March each year.
