Project outline
In collaboration with Swansea University Medical School’s Healthcare Technology Centre (HTC), ATiC worked with CTMUHB to develop a digital alternative to traditional ward whiteboards. The result: interactive e-whiteboards that significantly improved communication and coordination across four hospitals—proving especially valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Previously, patient information was shared using handwritten whiteboards, which were often cluttered, inconsistent, and difficult to update. The new digital system offered a cleaner, more efficient, and scalable solution for visualising and sharing patient data.
ATiC’s Contribution:
ATiC led the design evaluation of the e-whiteboard system, ensuring it met the needs of diverse hospital teams.
ATiC’s expertise:
- Transformed the interface and visual elements of the e-whiteboard, including optimising iconography and layout, and assessed the impact of these changes.
- Conducted UX interviews and observational studies across three hospitals to understand user needs and workflows.
- Tested and refined the usability of the system, resulting in a new set of 34 icons and a comprehensive style guide—developed in collaboration with Swansea-based Waters Creative.
- Created new methods for visualising patient information and communicating it effectively to specialist teams.
Impact:
This project demonstrated how thoughtful digital design can enhance clinical communication, improve patient care, and support healthcare teams in high-pressure environments.
