Surface Pattern and Textiles Facilities
Introduction
The programme is housed in a lively, light and airy studio that accommodates all years of the course making it the heartbeat of our Surface Pattern and Textiles community. You have a personal desk space for the duration of your studies. Either side of the studio are our well-equipped workshops where you can explore a broad range of materials and processes, enabling participation in relevant methods of design practice.
Our specialist workshops Include:
5th Floor Studio
Our spacious studio is the heart of our programme. A personal desk space every year ensures you are well-rooted in our vibrant studio community. We have large tables and collaborative spaces where we undertake group sessions or where students can spread out when work needs to be up-scaled.
Screen Printing and Dye Lab
The print room and dye lab is where you will learn how to apply pattern and colour onto an impressive array of substrates and surfaces, from paper, cloth to hard materials. You will explore processes spanning the expanse of textiles from plant dyeing to current industry processes. The academic delivery promotes experimentation and the professionalism of good studio practice.
Mac Suite
Our Mac suites are equipped with Apple computers, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other relevant professional software compatible with a broad Surface Pattern and Textiles context. You will be taught by academic staff within this space and benefit from generous open access to self-study.
Digital Printing
Our digital suites provide in-house digital textiles printing, UV printing onto any hard surface, and large-format paper printers for portfolio printing and wallpaper printing. Once inducted, you will be able to work independently, supported by technicians.
Cutting Technologies
The scope of our laser cutting and engraving facilities accommodates the potential for a wide variety of differing projects, materials, and scales. Once inducted, you will be able to work independently, supported by technicians.
Stitch Rooms
We have a suite of domestic and digital sewing machines, an industrial Juki, digital embroidery machines with industry-standard software, and a standalone 900-bed needle punching machine.
Multi-disciplinary Room
Our quirkiest space to make utilising multidisciplinary processes and mixed media with dedicated benches and access to cutting, joining, and forming facilities.
RISO
Riso printing offers a distinctive, experimental approach to image-making and self-promotion. You can produce bold, layered prints while developing technical understanding, with guidance from specialist staff throughout your projects.
Print Making
Our printmaking workshop supports a range of image-making processes, from screen printing to relief techniques using lino, collagraph, mono print, and more. You will find yourself here in scheduled sessions with plenty of additional access through open access, working with expert technicians.
Exhibition Spaces
We love to put on a show in Surface Pattern and Textiles and regularly utilise Swansea College of Art’s Foyer and Studio Griffiths Galleries, as well as Popping Up in our own department on the 5th floor. Inviting audiences in whether friends and family or live project partners, is a really important part of our creative community experience.
Shared Workshops & Cross-Disciplinary Access
You’ll benefit from shared access to workshops across the art school, encouraging interdisciplinary experimentation and a balance between traditional craft and contemporary design practice.
