Introduction

The programme is housed in a lively, light and airy studio that accommodates all years of the course making it the heartbeat of our Surface Pattern and Textiles community. You have a personal desk space for the duration of your studies. Either side of the studio are our well-equipped workshops where you can explore a broad range of materials and processes, enabling participation in relevant methods of design practice.

5th Floor Studio

Our spacious studio is the heart of our programme. A personal desk space every year ensures you are well-rooted in our vibrant studio community. We have large tables and collaborative spaces where we undertake group sessions or where students can spread out when work needs to be up-scaled.

Screen Printing and Dye Lab

The print room and dye lab is where you will learn how to apply pattern and colour onto an impressive array of substrates and surfaces, from paper, cloth to hard materials. You will explore processes spanning the expanse of textiles from plant dyeing to current industry processes.  The academic delivery promotes experimentation and the professionalism of good studio practice.

Mac Suite

Our Mac suites are equipped with Apple computers, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other relevant professional software compatible with a broad Surface Pattern and Textiles context. You will be taught by academic staff within this space and benefit from generous open access to self-study.

Digital Printing

Our digital suites provide in-house digital textiles printing, UV printing onto any hard surface, and large-format paper printers for portfolio printing and wallpaper printing. Once inducted, you will be able to work independently, supported by technicians.

Cutting Technologies

The scope of our laser cutting and engraving facilities accommodates the potential for a wide variety of differing projects, materials, and scales. Once inducted, you will be able to work independently, supported by technicians.

Stitch Rooms

We have a suite of domestic and digital sewing machines, an industrial Juki, digital embroidery machines with industry-standard software, and a standalone 900-bed needle punching machine.

Multi-disciplinary Room

Our quirkiest space to make utilising multidisciplinary processes and mixed media with dedicated benches and access to cutting, joining, and forming facilities.

RISO

Riso printing offers a distinctive, experimental approach to image-making and self-promotion. You can produce bold, layered prints while developing technical understanding, with guidance from specialist staff throughout your projects.

Print Making

Our printmaking workshop supports a range of image-making processes, from screen printing to relief techniques using lino, collagraph, mono print, and more. You will find yourself here in scheduled sessions with plenty of additional access through open access, working with expert technicians.

Exhibition Spaces

We love to put on a show in Surface Pattern and Textiles and regularly utilise Swansea College of Art’s Foyer and Studio Griffiths Galleries, as well as Popping Up in our own department on the 5th floor. Inviting audiences in whether friends and family or live project partners, is a really important part of our creative community experience.

Shared Workshops & Cross-Disciplinary Access

You’ll benefit from shared access to workshops across the art school, encouraging interdisciplinary experimentation and a balance between traditional craft and contemporary design practice.

Shared Access

Access to other areas of the Faculty is arranged through workshops, however, Swansea College of Art has a policy of allowing students shared access to all of our facilities.
