Pursuing her passions after years as a parent

Returning to education after 25 years and bringing up a family, Umbereen Naeem saw an opportunity and grasped it with both hands. 

“Now that my children have grown up, I’ve had the chance to pursue my passion for social work,” she says. “Studying is an opportunity for personal growth, career opportunities, job security and making a positive impact on people’s lives.

“I want to help others and make a difference which is why, when I saw the Skills for the Workplace course in Health and Social Care at UWTSD, I was drawn to it straight away.

“I made good friends from the start, and felt comfortable in the welcoming environment. I received support from lecturers and staff and gained practical skills, improving my confidence in the process.

“A highlight was becoming the course representative and being a spokesperson, helping to solve issues. There have been plenty of opportunities for progression, and I’ve undertaken several volunteering roles including at a family support centre, English Language Teaching and on a domestic care course.

“Overall, I would recommend this course to others because of the level of support and encouragement provided. The course has already helped me both professionally and personally, and my plans now are to work with children with behavioural problems in a school environment.”
