Ian Standen
Programme Director / Senior Lecturer
Background
Standen is an architect with over 35 years’ experience in architectural practice and in higher education. He is a former Associate Director at the Welsh School of Architecture Project Office, where he was involved in the academic provision of practice within research and teaching, undertaking projects that provided live test beds for research-derived ideas. He is also a former Associate Architect at Stride Treglown, Cardiff.
Specialist Subjects
- Standen currently teaches across the three years of the undergraduate BSc Architecture degree, including design studio, technology and environment, dissertations, and history and theory modules.
Professional and/or Research Experience
Standen’s interests are in practical solutions for sustainable communities and low-carbon buildings programmes; in particular, carbon-neutral community buildings and the retrofit of existing housing to achieve CO₂ reductions by 2030. In 2014, he secured funding from Innovate UK and the Welsh Government’s Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) for proposals for innovative energy-saving ideas compatible with traditionally constructed heritage buildings, generally pre-1919. Permeable Insulation and Power (PIP) is a new technology that applies cutting-edge low-powered electrical heating to permeable prefabricated hemp/lime-based internal wall insulation for existing buildings. The PIP study collaborative project involved architectural practice and innovative companies such as Wood Knowledge Wales, as well as BioComposites Bangor University, SPECIFIC Swansea University and Cardiff Metropolitan University. This work was included in Demystifying Architectural Research (2015), RIBA Publishing, by Anne Dye and Flora Samuel.
