Background

Richard Sutton is a Senior Lecturer in Engineering Mathematics, he completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Swansea University, graduating with a BSc. (Hons) in 2010 and an MSc. in 2011.

His Master’s research focused on approximate string matching algorithms within the field of bioinformatics. This included the analysis, implementation, and optimisation of techniques such as the Bitap algorithm, Needleman-Wunsch and Smith-Waterman algorithms, which relied heavily on matrix-based computation. These approaches were applied to the identification of harmful DNA sequences within biological samples, demonstrating the practical integration of computational mathematics and biology.

At undergraduate level, Richard specialised in the statistical foundations of management and actuarial science. His dissertation applied empirical analysis to large-scale time series datasets, using statistical techniques such as data de-seasonalisation and correlation analysis.
