Background

Sue Williams was born in Redruth Cornwall. She has been a practicing artist and academic since her graduation in Cardiff College of Art in the 70s. Her passion for her work has led her to developing major drawing events in National Museum of Wales and as far as Zimbabwe, funded by the Arts Council of Wales and CARTOON. 

Sue is committed and engaged in the development of dynamic strategies to support contemporary art practice, to the development of creative networks providing productive cultural communities. She has been a Gold Medal winner of The National Eisteddfod 2001 and has been recipient of numerous Arts Council and British Council Awards. 

Specialist Subjects

  • Williams’ focuses upon drawing through which drawing/painting installations, collaborations, film, and sound emerge. Since 2009 she has successfully collaborated with choreographers, composers, poets, and musicians.

Professional and/or Research Experience

Sue has an internationally recognised body of work and an exhibition history of both solo and group shows on five continents. She has a strong track record of awards including Artes Mundi Arts Prize 2006; Avesta Bienniale Sweden; Site-ations New York; The Rootstein Hopkins Award; Avesta Biennale Sweden; and acquisitions in many leading private and public collections worldwide including Wales Assembly Government; National Museum & Galleries of Wales; Contemporary Arts Society and National Library of Wales.

Her work has been exhibited worldwide including China; Queensland, Australia; Canberra, Australia; Geneva, Switzerland: Athens, Greece; Tbilisi, Georgia.

Sue has taught in various art schools, including Exeter; Wimbledon; Cardiff and Art Advisor for the Rijk Akademie Amsterdam and has been Professor in Fine Art Practice and the Course Director of Fine Art: Studio Site & Context since 2019
