Background

Xicheng Liu is a former banker and corporate finance researcher who now explores the intersection of Western business governance and ancient Chinese philosophy. His work bridges the analytical rigour of modern finance with the timeless wisdom of Confucian ethics, Daoist adaptability, and other classical schools of thought. He investigates how these philosophies can address contemporary governance challenges, from stakeholder alignment to sustainable leadership.

For example, Confucian role ethics reframes corporate hierarchies as reciprocal relationships, while Daoist wuwei (non-action) provides a model for decentralised decision-making in complex organisations. Xicheng demonstrates how these ideas can complement or challenge modern theories such as agency cost or shareholder primacy.

He engages with both academics and practitioners through writing and advisory roles, supporting firms in developing culturally nuanced governance frameworks.
