Voluntary scheme

As a member of our alumni community, your knowledge and experience could make a real difference to today’s students.

Through our Mentoring Programme, you’ll have the chance to:

  • connect directly with a student

  • offer the student guidance

  • share your journey

  • strengthen your own professional skills along the way

This voluntary scheme is designed to be flexible, rewarding, and impactful - for both you and your mentee.

Benefits of becoming a mentor

By becoming a mentor, you will:

  • help a student build confidence, develop career skills, and gain insight into the world of work

  • enhance your own communication, coaching and leadership skills

  • expand your professional network through new connections

  • experience the satisfaction of giving back to the UWTSD community

Programme details

The programme is straightforward and designed to fit around your commitments.

It includes:

  • duration: 6 months rolling programme

  • time commitment: around 2 hours per month (online or in person)

  • matching: you’ll pair with a student based on interests and where possible, geographical location. Once matched, it’ll be up to you to decide when to start your mentoring

  • support: guidance and resources provided throughout, plus mentor information and training sessions

Your role

Your role is not to have all the answers - but to listen, encourage, and share insights from your own journey.

You’ll be asked to:

  • support your mentee in setting and working towards their own goals

  • act as a sounding board, offering constructive feedback and fresh perspectives

  • encourage students to explore ideas, build self-belief, and take ownership of their choices

  • maintain confidentiality and mutual respect throughout the mentoring relationship

Non-directive mentoring

While you may sometimes lead conversations, the student sets the agenda. Your role is more facilitator and coach - guiding, challenging, and empowering them to think differently and develop confidence in their decisions.
