Nicholas Aldous, a Software Engineering degree apprentice at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is proving that it’s never too late to pursue a passion for technology. Originally from Mumbles, Swansea, and with an established career behind him, he made the bold decision to step back and embark on a new journey in software development.

Now working as an Apprentice Software Developer at UWTSD while studying part-time for his degree, he is thriving in both his academic and professional life, while balancing the demands of fatherhood.

“I’ve always been fascinated by technology and how it shapes the world around us,” he said. “When the opportunity for this apprenticeship came up, it felt like the perfect way to gain hands-on experience while learning. The combination of academic study and real-world application was a great fit for my learning style and career aspirations.”

His goal from the outset was clear: build a strong foundation in software engineering, enhance technical skills, and become a versatile developer. Through the course, he has gained confidence in working with databases, networks, and agile development - skills that will open up exciting career opportunities in the future.

One of the standout aspects of the apprenticeship has been applying what he learns in university directly to his work at UWTSD. He has particularly enjoyed working with databases, SQL, and programming languages such as JavaScript.

“The hands-on learning has been a major highlight,” he said. “I’ve also been introduced to a fantastic network of peers, which has been invaluable for my development.”

The apprenticeship has already had a direct impact on Nicholas’s work, giving him the skills and confidence to contribute more effectively to his team. “Learning about database management and SQL has been especially useful, helping me understand how data is structured and managed. Agile methodologies have also improved the way I collaborate and work efficiently within a team.”

Balancing work, study, and family life has been a challenge, particularly as a father of two young children. However, with careful time management and support from his employer, university, and family, he has found a way to make it work.

“I’ve had to be very disciplined with my schedule, setting aside dedicated time for assignments while still being present for my family. It’s been tough, but incredibly rewarding.

“This course provides an ideal foundation for anyone looking to start a career in software development. The apprenticeship model is a huge advantage because you’re learning while gaining real industry experience which is highly valued in the IT sector.

“I feel much more confident in my technical abilities and my contributions at work. Personally, it’s been fulfilling to challenge myself, develop new skills, and set an example for my children that it’s never too late to follow your passion and make a career change.”
