Flexible Learning Opens Doors for Adult Students at UWTSD
The Childhood, Youth, and Education team at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is excited to launch the new academic term by celebrating Adult Learners Week and welcoming a fresh cohort of students to its flexible, career-focused degree programmes.
With evening courses in Early Years Education and Care: Early Years Practitioner Status, as well as Inclusive Education Foundation Degrees and Top-Up Degrees, the team is proud to offer opportunities designed specifically for adult learners balancing work, family, and study commitments.
These degrees fit the ethos of adult learning week, offering degrees that can be studied in the evening and others that are also blended meaning students can study around work and other commitments. Equally important, these courses are designed by lecturers who have long term expertise in delivering high quality flexible provision and understand the barriers that can stop people returning to study. As a result, the learning environment created is based on small group sizes, discussion and hands on learning alongside developing further research and academic skills. Students bring their professional and life experiences into the classroom, enriching discussions and making each session engaging and dynamic.
Alison Rees Edwards, Programme Manager for the BA Early Years Education and Care: Early Years Practitioner Status at UWTSD, says:
“Our two-year accelerated Fast-Track-Flexi (FTF) degree programmes embody our commitment to lifelong learning by enabling our students to study full-time alongside work. During Adult Learning Week, we celebrate the transformative effects of education, and through our FTF programmes, we are empowering practitioners, parents and communities to shape brighter futures for young children. We are immensely proud of our FTF programmes, and the Early Years team are continually inspired by our students’ ability to thrive and grow as professionals and lifelong learners.”
Katie, who works in a local nursery, shared her thoughts as she began her studies:
“I am excited, nervous, but cannot wait to see my development and confidence during the course.”
Another student, Ingke, said that she had joined the course:
“in order to broaden her business and develop her management role.”
Nasima joined the course for herself and as a route into teaching.
“I am a mum of two, so the flexi option really works with the times”.
Rhian, who works in a local school, was inspired by feedback from past students:
“It works around by day work in school and around family life, really looking forward to what the next two years have in store”.
Glenda Tinney, the Admissions Tutor for the Early Years provision at UWTSD, said:
“It is wonderful to welcome so many new students. Our courses have been developed and continue to be developed with a focus on providing high quality adult education tailored for the needs of those who have work, family and other commitments. The days of having to give up work to study are long gone. For our students, we want to remove barriers so that they can follow their personal, careers and study goals. So study alongside working or volunteering in the childhood, youth and education sectors is a significant part of our portfolio. We also offer choice with a range of daytime courses for students who prefer this route as well. When we design our courses, what helps the student access the study that they need is first and foremost in our minds. We then design courses that are inclusive and accessible to all our learners. We cannot wait for this new cohort to get started.”
