At the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), we believe learning does not have an expiration date. Education is not confined to one chapter of life; it is a lifelong journey that grows with us, evolves with our experiences, and unlocks opportunities at every stage.

For many adults, returning to education can feel daunting; balancing families, careers, and commitments often seems incompatible with study. Yet, through initiatives such as UWTSD’s Professional Practice Framework (PPF), the University has redefined what it means to return to learning. As Sarah Loxdale, Senior Lecturer and Lead of Experiential Learning at UWTSD, explains:

“Our approach is designed to integrate learning into people’s existing lives, not take them away from it. The key is flexibility: courses can be tailored to individual circumstances, allowing learners to continue working while developing academically and professionally.”

This model empowers learners to reflect on the wealth of expertise gained through their careers and apply it critically in an academic setting. The result is not just enhanced knowledge, but also deeper professional insight and renewed personal growth.

One inspiring example of this philosophy in action is Rebecca Evans, who was recognised during Learning at Work Week 2024 for her exceptional leadership in promoting workplace safety at Tata Steel.

As a student of the Professional Practice Framework, Rebecca has combined her extensive experience with academic study to create a meaningful impact. Through the Recognition and Accreditation of Learning module, she successfully claimed the equivalent of two-thirds of a Degree in Professional Practice; an acknowledgement of the depth and value of her contributions to health and safety culture in heavy industry.

Reflecting on her journey, Rebecca said:
“Studying towards a Degree in Professional Practice has been a pivotal moment in my career and professional development. It has provided me with invaluable opportunities for reflection, growth, and validation of my expertise. By formally recognising my practical experiences, I’ve gained confidence in my abilities and a deeper appreciation for the insights gained through hands-on learning.”

Her achievements exemplify how lifelong learning can validate and amplify professional expertise. By drawing on her lived experience and engaging in academic reflection, Rebecca has enhanced her skills, advanced her career, and deepened her impact within her workplace. Her story demonstrates that returning to study is not about starting from scratch; it is about building upon the foundation of lived experience to open new possibilities.

As Programme Manager, Lowri Harris highlights:
“Many of our learners arrive with years of work-based expertise, yet they’re looking for ways to structure that knowledge, challenge assumptions, and apply it to solve complex problems. The framework allows them to undertake research that is directly relevant to their workplace, generating impact for themselves and their organisations.”

In today’s rapidly evolving industries, adaptability and curiosity are as valuable as technical expertise. For adult learners like Rebecca, lifelong learning is not just about academic achievement; it is about sustaining relevance, developing resilience, and shaping positive change in their communities and workplaces.

Rebecca’s success stands as a powerful reminder: education is not about leaving life behind; it is about enriching it. With flexible study options, recognition of prior learning, and a focus on workplace relevance, UWTSD ensures that lifelong learning is not only possible but transformative.

As Sarah Loxdale concludes:
“Learning is not a race; it’s a journey. And it’s never too late to take the next step.”
