UWTSD Computing Department Brings Communities Together Through Creative Workshops
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) Computing Department has been working closely with the Student Recruitment and Outreach (SRO) team throughout the year to deliver workshops in schools across Wales. These initiatives have included hosting school visits on campus and contributing to large-scale events such as the Skills Synergy event at Swansea Arena.

In August, SRO Officer Elisha collaborated with the department to expand outreach opportunities with local communities. As part of this, UWTSD recently welcomed 30 adults and children to take part in a hands-on Computing event led by lecturers in Games Design and Animation and Visual Effects (VFX). Participants also enjoyed a special visit from Spot, UWTSD’s quadrupedal research robot, produced by Boston Dynamics.
As part of the event, families created their own unique character designs. Over the coming weeks, these characters will be manufactured in-house by UWTSD, allowing participants to see their creations brought to life in a tangible way, making the experience even more memorable.
Participants were welcomed onto campus by staff who grew up in the same community.
Richard William Morgan, Lecturer in Games Design said: Events like this are designed to inspire people of all ages, raising awareness of the pathways available in education, careers, and creative technologies. The initiative also supports families to engage with lifelong learning, encouraging adults and children alike to inspire one another, return to education, and explore new opportunities.
“I know first-hand how important it is for young people and families in our community to feel connected to opportunities in education and industry. To see children and parents working side by side, imagining and creating together, was truly inspiring. Events like this help show that Computing and Games Design aren’t distant or out of reach, they’re accessible, creative, and full of possibility.”
Elisha, Student Recruitment and Outreach Officer, said: “We’re often told to raise aspirations, but this isn’t the challenge. What really matters is improving access to opportunities. These events are about breaking down barriers, sparking curiosity, and allowing people to see themselves in spaces they might not have thought were for them. Supporting families to engage with UWTSD helps build a support network across generations, where adults and children inspire each other to achieve.”
UWTSD is committed to creating inclusive opportunities that connect communities with education, inspire creativity, and build pathways for the future.
