The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) has offered students from the BA Early Years Education and Care courses wonderful opportunities to explore language, literacy and stories in innovative ways through its immersive rooms.

Second year students from both the Carmarthen and Swansea campuses have been exploring the opportunities to create engaging opportunities that put children right in the story book. They have also been considering how this particular technology could be used to create their own story time experiences and support their own practice in settings. 

The immersive rooms on campus provide students in so many innovative ways to learn. The Early Years Education and Care course has also used the rooms to share images that allow students to reflect on what they do in their own work with children. 

Student Danielle Wheatland found the experience inspirational and beneficial. She said: 

“I personally found it very interesting and I was shocked by the amount of different things you are able to do in the room with the technology they had.”

The department is now planning to film the students practical activities so that they can develop the content shared in the rooms further. 

Glenda Tinney, UWTSD’s Early Years Education and Care Lecturer and Admissions Tutor added: 

“We are starting our outdoor module and are grateful that the UWTSD immersive room team will support us film and create content that help students reflect on outdoor learning and the opportunities for young children. These collaborations are essential to make sure that our degrees retain their cutting edge and strong links between theory and practice.”

Alison Rees Edwards, UWTSD Programme Director for the Early Years Education and Care degree said: 

“With the ongoing development of digital literacy in the field of education, it is particularly important that our students have as many opportunities as possible to build on their own digital skills. As part of the Language and Literacy module, students learn about digital competence, in both adults and children, and are required to use a digital device to demonstrate their own digital storytelling skills. Introducing students to the immersive rooms has the potential to further enhance these digital skills and we are very excited to work with the Immersive Room team for future modules.”
