UWTSD Hosts Launch of Engineering Education Scheme Wales’s Year 12 Project
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) proudly hosted the southwest Wales launch of the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) 6th Form Project at its SA1 Waterfront Campus. The event, organised by EESW South Wales Coordinator Jeremy Morgan, brought together young aspiring engineers, industry experts, and educators for an inspiring start to this year’s challenge.
The EESW project connects teams of up to eight Year 12 students from schools and colleges across Wales with local companies who set them a real-world engineering brief. Over the coming months, students will work collaboratively to design, test, and deliver innovative solutions to their assigned challenges.
This year’s welcome event featured teams from Bishop Gore School, Bishop Vaughan School, Bryntirion Comprehensive School, Cynffig Comprehensive School, Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, and St Joseph’s RC School and Sixth Form Centre. Representatives from their partner companies attended to present the challenge briefs and kickstart the creative process.
Alongside the EESW activities, UWTSD’s Student Recruitment and Outreach team and academic staff showcased the university’s impressive range of engineering-related courses including Motorsport, Energy and Environmental Engineering, and Degree Apprenticeship opportunities. Students also explored the university’s state-of-the-art labs and facilities during guided tours and hands-on workshops.
Donna Williams, Senior Widening Access Officer at UWTSD, said: “UWTSD is delighted to collaborate with Engineering Education Scheme Wales and is grateful to be part of such an inspiring initiative. Welcoming students to our campus for the first time provided an excellent opportunity to showcase our facilities, including the Motorsport department and immersive room, and to highlight the breadth of opportunities available at the University. We look forward to welcoming them back in the future.”
Jeremy Morgan said: “EESW is very grateful to the university’s Student Recruitment Outreach team and University Academics for hosting this exciting event.”
Teachers and students have praised the event’s organisation and impact.
Martin Gore, Senior Science Technician at Bishop Gore School, Swansea, said: “This event was run very well as always by UWTSD (my third year accompanying students here for this event). The students found the content informative and engaging. The presentations by the University hosts and Jeremy from EESW were clear, informative, and concise and relevant to the EESW aims. We look forward to returning for the workshops in the near future.”
Hywel Longman, Head of Physics at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, added: “The facilities available at UWTSD lead the way in the field of engineering, especially in motorsport. If you’re considering going to this university to study, particularly within engineering, the opportunities available are definitely worth exploring.”
Student participant Joe Pallett, from Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, shared his enthusiasm: “Today I have learnt that UWTSD offer a range of great degree options, including a very cool motorsports engineering degree! The facilities are great and we visited the immersive room and library too, a very cool university!”
The event underscored the value of collaboration between education and industry , inspiring the next generation of engineers to innovate, design, and shape the future.
