UWTSD welcomes new engineering degree apprentices as TSC Subsea invests in future talent
Two young engineers from Bridgend have begun exciting new career journeys as they combine university study with employment at TSC Subsea, a global leader in subsea non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection services.

Joshua Ludlow and Lucas Kenny, both 18, have joined TSC Subsea as Tooling Technicians while studying for a Degree Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD). The programme allows them to gain a university degree while developing hands-on skills and experience in industry.
For Joshua, engineering runs in the family. After studying Physics and Engineering at A Level, he saw UWTSD as the perfect opportunity to build on his interests while gaining valuable work experience:
“I chose UWTSD as it is a well-recognised university for engineering and was the pathway to get both a degree and work experience. This course lines up perfectly with my education and previous experience in mechanical engineering. My aim is to complete the degree with a greater understanding across a range of topics to help me progress in my career.”
Joshua has already started practical training with TSC Subsea, including forklift certification and Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) for electrical safety. He says the highlights of his course so far have been “seeing the engineering workshops and meeting all the people involved in my education.”
Lucas also comes from a strong engineering background and chose the apprenticeship route because it combined his passion for the subject with clear career prospects:
“I’ve always enjoyed engineering, and I think getting a degree while working is the best way to go, it sets me up for my future life goals. My aims are to finish the degree, graduate from UWTSD, and progress my career as far as I can in the engineering industry.”
Lucas has been impressed with the start of his degree:
“It’s a really good opportunity with great facilities, and we’re offered lots of support. All the lecturers are friendly and approachable, which makes a big difference.”
TSC Subsea is a world leader in subsea inspection technologies, delivering exclusive, remotely deployed solutions to assess the structural integrity of offshore assets. By investing in apprentices like Joshua and Lucas, the company is strengthening its future workforce while supporting the wider engineering skills pipeline.
Stuart Kenny, President of TSC Subsea said: “At TSC Subsea, we are committed to developing future engineering talent. Apprenticeships like this allow young engineers to gain essential skills, academic knowledge, and industry experience from day one. Joshua and Lucas have already shown enthusiasm and dedication, and we look forward to supporting them as they progress in their studies and careers.”
Matthew Wicker, Head of Apprenticeships at UWTSD, said: “We are delighted to welcome Joshua and Lucas onto the programme and to see them thrive with the support of TSC Subsea. Degree apprenticeships offer the best of both worlds, industry experience alongside academic study, equipping apprentices with the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed to make an immediate impact in the workplace. We look forward to following their journeys as they progress in both their studies and their careers.
“The partnership between UWTSD and employers like TSC Subsea highlights the value of degree apprenticeships in growing the next generation of engineers, equipping them with both the technical expertise and real-world experience needed to meet the challenges of today’s engineering industry.”
