  • Interview

All applicants to Swansea College of Art are required to have an interview.

We really enjoy the interview process, getting to know you and your work, and we feel that this is the best way to find the right students for our programmes. This also ensures that our applicants have all the information they need to make the right choice for them too.

If you have any queries before your interview, please contact us at artanddesign@uwtsd.ac.uk.

    Portfolio

We ask that you bring a portfolio of some past and current work. Your portfolio is a collection of your most exciting and representative work, showcasing your creative abilities, technical skills, and artistic vision. It tells the story of your creative journey, highlighting your unique style, interests, and ideas as they develop. We interpret the term ‘portfolio’ broadly and are happy for you to do the same - this can include finished pieces, work in progress, sketchbooks, drawings, and projects that are still unfolding, as these give us insight into your thinking and creative process. Whether in physical or digital format, your portfolio is an opportunity to showcase your creative journey in a way that feels authentic to you, with each piece highlighting your creative potential and enthusiasm for the programme you are applying for.

We understand that many applicants are still mid-qualification (e.g. A-Level, BTEC, L3, Foundation) and are developing an emerging body of work, so there’s no pressure for everything to be polished or complete.

  • Assessment is carried out through coursework, both written and practical. There are no exams on this course. Students are formatively assessed throughout a module; summative assessment takes place at the end of a module. A variety of teaching and learning methods are used throughout the course which include:

    Lectures

Usually at the start of a scheduled contact period, lectures will generally consist of a formal presentation giving information relevant to the module, accompanied by visuals, and followed by a screening or group tutorial/activity.

    Group Tutorials

Depending on the cohort size, module content and individual lecturer preferences, these are usually in groups of no more than six students at a time and delivered over a set period.

    Individual Tutorials

Most often scheduled for level 5, level 6 & level 7 students, individual tutorials offer a more focused and in-depth opportunity for student feedback and development of ideas. Most often arranged in relation to individual practice modules such as Student-Led Projects.

    Critiques

Group critiques are scheduled regularly for all year groups. For level 4 these often form part of the assessment at the end of short projects, for levels 5, 6 & 7 they are scheduled for the purpose of interim reviews and work-in-progress feedback, involving student participation and peer criticism.

    Workshops

Delivered to teach specific skills to students, group size will depend on the subject and room size and can include project work. These are not usually formally marked but can be subject to group criticism, and informal feedback will be given.

    Presentations

Formal presentations by students to peers and staff are used for research and development through to finished work. Students usually begin doing presentations at level 4 in small groups to build confidence in the process.

There are then assessed research presentations to peers at level 5 and Major Project Presentations to staff and other year groups at level 6 & 7. The presentation is an ideal vehicle for developing individual confidence and transferable skills.

  • Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources, which in most cases are sufficient to complete their programme of study. We provide the basic materials necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop and studio facilities.

However, art and design students will likely incur some additional costs to extend their investigation of their personal practice. For example, purchasing their own specialised materials and equipment, joining in optional study trips, or printing.

Students are expected to bring their own personal art and design equipment with them when they commence the course.  We can advise on the correct equipment needed for your programme of studies, and signpost appropriate suppliers if you wish to purchase essential items before or during your studies.

A basic art and design kit will cost approximately £100 but you may well already have much of the equipment required so check with us first.  Also, although we have extensive dedicated digital design studios (PC and MAC) for you to undertake your coursework, you may wish to bring your own digital devices. Check with us first before making a purchase.

Depending on distance and duration, optional study visits can vary in cost from approximately £10 to visit local galleries and exhibitions to £200+ for overseas visits. These costs cover things like transport, entry to venues and accommodation and are normally at reduced rates for our students.

  • Study through the medium of Welsh or Bilingually

UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

Once you successfully complete your Foundation Year studies, you will automatically advance onto the main degree.

    • Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE). This is a one-year course and is equivalent to the first year of the three-year, full-time bachelor’s degree.

Once you have successfully completed your CertHE studies, you will be eligible to progress for the remaining two years of the bachelor’s degree.

These are ideal routes if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied this subject, or if you did not achieve the grades you need for a place on this degree.

Students learn how to present a balanced, evidenced argument through their formal written work, as well as via individual and group presentations.

Within the final year, students will design and conduct their own independent project in a specialist area of their choice.

Psychology (Full-time) (BSc Hons)

Swansea
3 Years Full-time
96-112 UCAS Points

Our Psychology degree offers a clear and critical understanding of how psychology helps us grasp important 21st-century issues. You will gain scientific training and quantitative skills to study the mind and behaviour while also developing strong, transferable skills. These skills are essential for further study or entering the workforce.

What sets our programme apart is the blend of practical skill development with theoretical knowledge. This approach ensures that you not only understand psychological processes but can also apply this knowledge in real-world situations. You will study social psychology, developmental psychology, biological psychology, and cognitive psychology. This comprehensive coverage aligns with the standards of a British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited course, ensuring you receive a high-quality education recognised across the field.

In addition to these core areas, you will explore individual differences, research methods, and conceptual and historical issues. Our modules are designed to equip you with strong real-world skills that go beyond the basics of a typical undergraduate psychology course.

One unique aspect of our programme is its emphasis on developing students as scientifically literate psychological scientists. This means you’ll learn to think critically and scientifically about human behaviour analysis. Our dedicated psychology staff are committed to close-up teaching and learning, offering you personal attention that is often not possible at larger institutions.

As you progress through the course, particularly in your final year, you will have the freedom to choose from a variety of modules. This allows you to tailor your degree to match your specific interests, whether that be in clinical psychology, forensic psychology, or any other area within traditional psychology careers.

Our aim is to provide a robust understanding of psychological processes, including reasoning, memory, and language. You will also gain insight into neuro-scientific processes and their impact on health-related behaviour. By the end of the course, you will be well-prepared for a range of careers in professions or for further study.

  • 96-112 UCAS Tariff Points

The UCAS tariff score is applicable to you if you have recently studied a qualification that has a UCAS tariff equivalence. UCAS provides a tariff calculator for you to work out what your qualification is worth within the UCAS tariff.

    Alternative entry routes

If this course interests you, but you don’t have the entry requirements to join our bachelor’s degree you could consider:

    • ‘with Foundation Year’. This route is designed to give you extra support as it provides you with an additional year (full-time) of supported study.

Once you successfully complete your Foundation Year studies, you will automatically advance onto the main degree.

    • Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE). This is a one-year course and is equivalent to the first year of the three year, full-time bachelor’s degree.

Once you have successfully completed your CertHE studies, you will be eligible to progress for the remaining two years of the bachelor’s degree.

These are ideal routes if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied this subject, or if you did not achieve the grades you need for a place on this degree.

    Admissions Advice and Support

We may make you a lower offer based on a range of factors, such as your background, experiences and individual circumstances. This is known as ‘Contextual Admissions’. For specific advice and support you can contact our enquiries team for more information about entry requirements.

    English language requirements

If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

Visit the International Applications section of our website to find out more about our English Language Requirements and pre-sessional English Language Courses.

    Visa and funding requirements

If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.

For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.

International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship.

For full information read our visa application and guides.

Please note students receiving US Federal Aid are only able to apply for in-person, on-campus programmes which will have no elements of online study.

  • This programme will offer a range of traditional and innovative assessment methods to give you the opportunity to extend your practical and academic skills and encourage your independent learning. These will include practical skills assessments, academic essays and exams, individual and group presentations, research reports and case studies.

Your overall degree classification marks will be calculated from Years Two and Three of your studies. This classification will be calculated as 33% at Level 5 and 67% at Level 6.

  • Students may be required to apply for and obtain a UWTSD Enhanced Disclosure Barring Check (DBS). The fee for this is dependent on the DBS; it is currently approximately £49.50.

Students are required to gain practical placement experience throughout the second year, for which a DBS may be required (see above). This placement will also incur travel and refreshments costs that will be payable by the student.

The department also offers students optional opportunities to partake in visits beyond the campus, for example, Cardiff or London. The students incur the costs of these optional visits and activities.

BPS Student Conference Attendance (Optional) £100.

  • UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and although there aren’t currently any modules available through the medium of Welsh on this course, in all cases students can submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

    Welsh Opportunities

As a leading Welsh university, we are proud to offer dedicated support services and halls of residence for Welsh-speaking students, encouraging the sense of community and the feeling of a home away from home, including joining clubs and societies for Welsh speakers and becoming a member of our vibrant Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol branch.

    Opportunities to Learn Welsh

We also provide a variety of opportunities to learn and develop your Welsh language skills.

  • You may be eligible for funding to help support your study. To find out about scholarships, bursaries and other funding opportunities that are available, please visit our Bursaries and Scholarships section.

  • The postgraduate route is multifaceted, and not all graduates will choose to pursue postgraduate qualifications in Psychology or Counselling. The structure, nature and content of this unique programme allows students to develop strong analytical and transferable skills welcomed by many sectors including Education, Social Care, Nursing and allied professions, Business and HR. Many of our non-standard entry students already have a professional career (recent examples include nursing, physiotherapy, and careers in mental health) and use their degree to further their career.

Students who graduate with a minimum lower second-class honours classification (2:2) are eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society. This indicates that students have met the curriculum requirements derived from the Quality Assurance Agency’s (2019) subject benchmark statement for Psychology and is often an important prerequisite for students wishing to go on to further postgraduate study or training in psychology.

Over the  years, the programme has seen a large proportion of  students graduating with 2:1 honours and above, and progressing on to further postgraduate training on BPS-accredited postgraduate courses (popular routes being  Clinical Psychology, Occupational Psychology and Health Psychology), as well as pursuing a Masters qualification on the MSc in Applied  Psychology or the MA in Advanced Counselling Theory and Research offered at UWTSD.

An increasing number of students are also choosing to pursue practice-based postgraduate counselling training at postgraduate, or master’s level through the postgraduate portfolio offered at UWTSD, and several students stay with us to train for qualification on the MA Psychotherapeutic Practice: Humanistic programme.
