Confucian Classical Studies (Full-time) (MA)

Swansea
2 Years Full-time
2:2 honours degree and competency in both Chinese and English

The Confucian Classical Studies MA programme offers students a chance to explore the rich traditions of ancient Chinese texts and ideas. This course dives into the heart of China’s cultural and intellectual past, focusing on the study of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. These ancient beliefs still influence modern-day discussions about well-being, morality, and how we live together in society.

Students on this programme will develop skills in textual studies, where they will read and interpret important works from China’s past. Learning ancient Chinese languages will be a key part of this, allowing students to engage with the original writings. These studies provide a deep understanding of ancient religions and Chinese philosophy, helping students to think about how ancient ideas about life, morality, and society can still matter today.

The course is part of the Liberal Arts, which means it encourages open-minded thinking and critical thinking. Students will explore how ideas from different cultures and belief systems can work together, promoting interfaith dialogue and the sharing of multicultural values. This programme offers an exciting chance to reflect on personal beliefs, spirituality, and the Chinese moral codes that shaped society for centuries.

The aim of the programme is not only academic but also practical. By learning translation and interpretationskills, students will help to keep alive the traditions of Chinese culture and heritage. This aspect of cultural preservation ensures that these ancient teachings continue to have relevance in today’s world. Through their studies, students will also gain a clear understanding of the philosophy of Ancient China, which reflects on the balance between individuals and society, as well as the importance of living in harmony with nature.

Overall, this programme prepares students for a wide range of opportunities. Whether pursuing further academic research or teaching, the Confucian Classical Studies MA equips students with knowledge that bridges the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary issues. It’s a unique journey into the past that offers valuable insights for the present and the future.

What you will learn

Our philosophy for learning and teaching on the Confucian Classical Studies programme centres on deep engagement with Classical Chinese texts, enhancing critical thinking, and developing advanced skills in textual analysis. Through structured modules and independent research, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the spiritual, cultural, and political values embedded in Confucianism and ancient Chinese literature.

Year 1

In the first year, students will focus on the foundational skills necessary for studying Classical Chinese texts. Modules will cover textual criticism, commentary, and methodologies of textual analysis, providing a framework for understanding Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Key texts such as the I Ching, The Book of History and the Three Annals of Spring and Autumn will be explored, alongside the historical impact of these works on Chinese philosophy and governance.

Year 2

The second year deepens engagement with more complex Confucian texts, including The Four Books and governing principles of Han. Students will also explore how Confucianism has been received in the West, developing skills in translation and interpretation through the study of Classical Chinese texts in English. This year prepares students to apply critical methodologies to Confucian writings, developing expertise in cultural preservation and philosophical analysis.

Students will also undertake a dissertation, where they will apply their research skills to produce a detailed critical commentary on a selected Classical Chinese text. This independent project will allow them to demonstrate their deep understanding of Chinese culture and heritage, showcasing their ability to engage critically with ancient Chinese languages and key Confucian principles

The course caters to all levels of language proficiency, from beginner to advanced levels, ensuring that each student can progress at their own pace.

The course’s primary aim is to support language acquisition and language development. The unique teaching structure allows you to explore the classical texts and delve deeply into the world of Classics. Each year, two works are selected for study in both Greek and Latin. For each language, one text is prose and the other is verse, offering a well-rounded approach to both literary forms. The selection of authors changes annually, which ensures a fresh and engaging experience for students. This means you will study both canonical authors and non-canonical authors, gaining a broad perspective on ancient literature.

In recent years, the Latin works studied have included texts by Petronius, Columella, Ovid, Claudian, and Statius. For the Greek texts, students have explored works like the Homeric Hymns, Plato, Diodorus, Sophocles, and Euripides. These authors represent a rich diversity of styles and themes, from philosophy and history to epic poetry and tragedy.

The programme offers a comprehensive approach to mastering these ancient languages, making it an excellent choice for anyone interested in pursuing further academic study or simply deepening their understanding of ancient literature. Whether you are looking to explore the beauty of Latin verse or the depth of Greek philosophy, this course will provide the tools and resources you need to succeed.

Defnyddir amrywiaeth o ddulliau addysgu a dysgu trwy gydol y cwrs sy’n cynnwys, ymhlith eraill, y canlynol:

    Tiwtorialau Anffurfiol

Cynhelir y tiwtorialau hyn yn rheolaidd, ar draws pob lefel. Ym Mlwyddyn 1, mae pob myfyriwr yn gweld ac yn trafod ei waith gydag aelod o staff ym mhob sesiwn stiwdio, ac yn yr un modd ym Mlwyddyn 2. Mae myfyrwyr y drydedd a’r bedwaredd flwyddyn yn tueddu i weithio’n fwy annibynnol ac maen nhw’n cofrestru ar gyfer tiwtorial pan fyddant yn teimlo bod angen. Fodd bynnag, fel tîm, rydym yn sicrhau bod pob myfyriwr ym Mlwyddyn 3 yn cael ei weld gan o leiaf un aelod o’r staff academaidd bob wythnos. Rydym yn ymfalchïo yn y ffaith bod cyfle i weld staff mor rheolaidd ag y dymunwch.

    Tiwtorialau Ffurfiol

Cynhelir y rhain ddwywaith y tymor gydag o leiaf dau aelod o staff. Trafodir y gwaith, datblygiad ymarferol a chysyniadol, bwriadau’r myfyriwr i’r dyfodol ac ati. Mae’n gyfle i’r naill barti neu’r llall godi unrhyw broblemau/pryderon. Caiff adroddiad ysgrifenedig o’r tiwtorial ei ddyblygu, a bydd y myfyriwr yn cadw un copi a chaiff y llall ei storio yn ei ffeil cofnodion.

    Beirniadaethau grwp

Cynhelir y rhain yn rheolaidd, ar draws pob lefel, gydag un aelod o staff. Maen nhw’n gyfle gwych i fyfyrwyr rannu a chyfnewid syniadau gyda’u cyfoedion mewn modd strwythuredig yn ogystal â chael mewnbwn gwerthfawr gan staff.

    Cyflwyniadau Anffurfiol a Ffurfiol

Mae natur y cyflwyniadau’n amrywio yn ôl y lefel: ym Mlwyddyn 1, cyflwynir cyflwyniadau anffurfiol hanner ffordd drwy’r semester cyntaf er mwyn helpu myfyrwyr i fagu hyder wrth sôn am eu gwaith gyda’u cyfoedion a staff. Maen nhw fel arfer yn rhan o’r asesiad ar ddiwedd pob prosiect hefyd. Ym Mlwyddyn 3, mae Cyflwyniad Ffurfiol yn rhan o’r asesiad terfynol yn y Sioe Raddio.

    Arddangos gwaith

Eto, mae natur hyn yn amrywio yng nghyd-destun y prosiectau, y gwaith i’w asesu a chyfnod y rhaglen - o ran ffurfioldeb, gall amrywio o fod mewn lleoliad cyhoeddus i fod wrth ddesg y myfyriwr unigol.

Fodd bynnag, mae’n debygol y bydd myfyrwyr celf a dylunio yn gorfod talu rhai costau ychwanegol i ymestyn eu harchwiliad o’u harfer personol. Er enghraifft, prynu eu deunyddiau a’u hoffer arbenigol eu hunain, ymuno â theithiau astudio dewisol, ac argraffu.
Mae disgwyl i fyfyrwyr ddod â’u hoffer celf a dylunio personol eu hunain gyda nhw pan fyddant yn dechrau’r cwrs. Gallwn roi cyngor ar yr offer cywir sydd ei angen ar gyfer eich rhaglen astudio a chyfeirio at gyflenwyr priodol os byddwch yn dymuno prynu eitemau hanfodol cyn, neu yn ystod, eich astudiaethau.

Os byddwch yn dewis astudio’ch cwrs naill ai’n llawn neu’n rhannol drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg, efallai y byddwch yn gymwys i wneud cais am ysgoloriaethau a bwrsariaethau i’ch cefnogi gyda’ch astudiaethau.

Mae argaeledd modiwlau cyfrwng Cymraeg yn cael ei adolygu’n rheolaidd a gall amrywio bob blwyddyn yn dibynnu ar staffio, diddordebau ymchwil, amserlenni, galw myfyrwyr, ac isafswm niferoedd cofrestru, felly ni ellir gwarantu modiwlau penodol bob amser, cysylltwch â ni i drafod mwy.

Students are formatively assessed throughout a module, summative assessment takes place at the end of a module. A variety of teaching and learning methods are used throughout the course which includes amongst others;

    Informal Tutorials

These tutorials are held on a regular basis, across all levels. In Year 1 each student sees and discusses his / her work with a member of staff at each studio session, likewise in Year 2. Third and fourth year students tend to work more independently and sign up for tutorial when she/he feels the need arises. However, as a team, we ensure that every student in Year 3 is seen by at least one member of the academic staff each week.  We pride ourselves on the fact that there is the opportunity to see staff as regularly as you may require.

    Formal Tutorials

These are held twice a term with at least two members of staff. The work is discussed, practical and conceptual development, future intentions of the student etc. It is an opportunity for any issues/concerns by either party, to be raised. A written account of the tutorial is duplicated, one copy kept by the student the other stored in his / her records file.

    Group critiques

These are held on a regular basis, across all levels, with one member of staff. They provide an excellent opportunity for students to share and exchange ideas with their peers in a structured manner in addition to valuable input from staff.

    Informal & Formal presentations

The nature of the presentations varies according to the level: in Year 1 informal presentations are introduced halfway through the first semester in order to help students gain confidence in talking about their work to their peers and staff it is also usually part of the assessment at the end of each project. 2nd-year students are expected to give a Formal Presentation as part of their Professional Practice & Group Design Module and at the end of the year as part of their Major project.  In Year 3 a Formal Presentation is part of the final assessment at the Degree Show

    Exhibiting work

Again the nature of this varies within the context of the projects, the work to be assessed and the stage of the programme – it can range in formality from a public venue to the individual student’s desk space.

  • Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources, which in most cases are sufficient to complete their programme of study. We provide the basic materials necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop and studio facilities.

However, it is likely that art and design students will incur some additional costs to extend their investigation of their personal practice. For example, purchasing their own specialised materials and equipment, joining in optional study trips, and printing.

Students are expected to bring their own personal art and design equipment with them when they commence the course.  We can advise on the correct equipment needed for your programme of studies and signpost appropriate suppliers if you wish to purchase essential items before or during your studies.

A basic ‘art and design kit’ will cost approximately £100 but you may well already have much of the equipment required so check with us first.  Also, although we have extensive dedicated digital design studios (PC and MAC) for you to undertake your coursework you may wish to bring your own digital devices, again check with us first before making a purchase.

    Placement

There will be an additional fee of £1800 for students who choose to study the programme with the optional year in industry placement.

  • Study through the medium of Welsh or Bilingually

UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.
