What you will learn

Our philosophy in teaching and learning is rooted in fostering creativity, critical thinking, and technical skills. We believe in a hands-on, explorative approach, allowing students to engage with diverse artistic practices and develop their unique artistic voice. 

Our Art and Design Foundation course is taught entirely at Level 4, providing a clear progression from A-Level studies. This structure allows students to take the time to consider BA specialist options within the context of a full art school experience.  

We maintain the ethos and magic of Foundation, enabling students to build a bedrock of experience and skill while discovering new areas they might not have had a chance to explore previously. This foundational approach is essential for success at the degree level and vital for making informed decisions about a future career in the creative industry. 

Our studio-based teaching and learning approach is characterised by enquiry and learning through drawing, making and process, writing, research, presentation, and discussion. 

Introduction to Art and Design: This established course is a core part of at Swansea College of Art (UWTSD), with a history going back more than 100 years old, you will start with a broad introduction to art and design. This initial phase focuses on experimentation and creative practices, building a solid foundation and allowing you to explore new areas. 

Developing Technical Skills: throughout the course, you will have access to our beautiful studio in the ALEX building whilst also working across the Alex and Dynevor Campuses, accessing specialist workshops and state-of-the-art facilities. This hands-on experience with both traditional and modern equipment will enhance your technical abilities and understanding of various artistic disciplines. 

Portfolio Development and Specialisation: As the course progresses, the emphasis shifts to portfolio development and degree course preparation, including a final year exhibition. You’ll be introduced to specialist study areas including Fine Art, Visual Communication, Lens-based Media, 3D Design, Fashion and Textiles. This includes preparing for further studies or careers in fields like Illustration, Graphic Design, Games Design, Digital Arts, Animation, Film and Video, Photography, and more. Working alongside degree students, you will gain invaluable experience and insight, ensuring you make well-informed decisions for your future career in the creative industry.

  • 32 UCAS tariff points  

    • e.g. A-levels: E, BTEC: PPP, IB: 24 and Portfolio 

    The UCAS tariff score is applicable to you if you have recently studied a qualification that has a UCAS tariff equivalence. UCAS provides a tariff calculator for you to work out what your qualification is worth within the UCAS tariff.  

    We are interested in creative people who demonstrate a strong commitment to art and/or design and, therefore, we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. 

    We arrange interviews for all applicants to assess suitability for the chosen course. Your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered, as well as your portfolio of work. 

    GCSEs  

    GCSE grade A*-C (grade 9-4 in England) in English and Mathematics is also required.  

     Admissions Advice and Support  

    We may make you a lower offer based on a range of factors, such as your background, experiences and individual circumstances. This is known as ‘Contextual Admissions’. For specific advice and support you can contact our enquiries team for more information about entry requirements.  

    English language requirements  

    If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

    Visa and funding requirements  

    If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.  

    For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.  

    International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship.

    Please note students receiving US Federal Aid are only able to apply for in-person, on-campus programmes which will have no elements of online study. 

  • Each of the 6 modules earns twenty credits, and all will be assessed through Coursework.

    Coursework is presented in Sketchbooks/Visual Diaries, Preparatory Work, Workshop & Drawing Class Work, Project Outcomes, Digital Documentation, a Selected and Collated Portfolio, Written Assignments.

    Critiques

    Group critiques are scheduled regularly to conclude projects and form part of the assessment. They provide the opportunity for formal presentation of outcomes and preparatory work and for peer and staff criticism.

    Selected and Collated Portfolio 

    Students working with staff select and collate a portfolio of work for presentation at interviews for progression onto further courses/other. The main body of the portfolio will be project work and, in particular specialist outcomes and preparatory work. Drawings and project work are selected to show additional skills and ability. Sketchbooks, visual diaries and any 3D preparatory work will accompany the portfolio.

    Written Assignments

    Formats for written assignments may include essays on proposed themes, exhibition reports, project proposals and reviews. Presentation formats may include: illustrated and fully referenced academic essays and less formal reports and/or blogs

  • Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources, which in most cases are sufficient to complete their programme of study. We provide the basic materials necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop and studio facilities.

    However, art and design students will likely incur some additional costs to extend their investigation of their personal practice. For example, purchasing their own specialised materials and equipment, joining optional study trips, and printing. 

    Students are expected to bring their own personal art and design equipment with them when they commence the course.  We can advise on the correct equipment needed for your programme of studies and signpost appropriate suppliers if you wish to purchase essential items before or during your studies. 

    A basic ‘art and design kit’ will cost approximately £100, but you may well already have much of the equipment required, so check with us first.  Although we have extensive dedicated digital design studios (PC and MAC) for you to undertake your coursework, you may wish to bring your own digital devices, again check with us first before making a purchase.

  • Some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.  

    If you choose to study your course either fully or partially through the medium of Welsh, you may be eligible to apply for scholarships and bursaries to support you with your studies.

Foundation students obtain access to specialist study areas such as; Printmaking, Photography dark rooms, Construction in a fully equipped workshop, 3D Printing, Laser-cutting, Ceramics and Glass, Mac and PC Digital work spaces.

What you will learn

Alongside the form and genre options, you will take modules in research and archiving, following which you will create a major piece of work which may lead to publication. Throughout your three years you will have regular contact with, and support from, a range of different writers.

Workshop sessions will be held within which you will be encouraged to discuss your work with your community of fellow writers. Your tutor will support you in preparing your work for publication and advise on places to approach. Alongside one-to-one tuition, you will also take modules on different aspects of the writing industry, including sessions on reviewing, editing and writing to brief.

There is a strong sense of community among students and staff, and the ratio of staff to students is such that students can access their lecturers when needed. The small classes are always friendly and never intimidating, allowing staff to know their students on a first-name basis.

You will explore poetry, prose and drama through introductory modules. These basic courses will help you understand the basics different genres and forms. You will also take part in sessions workshop, discussing your work with peers and receiving feedback from tutors to refine your writing skills.

    English language requirements 

    If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

    For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.

  • UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and although there aren’t currently any modules available through the medium of Welsh on this course, in all cases students can submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

  • The programme is assessed in a variety of ways and will include several of the following types of assessment: essays of 1,000 to 4,000 words in length, document analyses, book reviews, short reports and reflective journals, timed tests, take-home exams, field journals, posters, group and individual presentations, dissertations of 10,000 words, wikis, commentaries and film evaluations.

  • The Faculty has estimated on the assumption that students buy new copies of the books. Students may also choose to spend money on printing drafts of work.

    Students may spend up to £300 per year on books and additional related materials.

    Students are expected to submit two hard copies of their final project, the estimated cost for binding these is £20.

    Optional Field trip:
    Faculty works to ensure that there are a range of fieldwork and field trip options available both locally and internationally. Thus students can opt to take either more expensive or less expensive placements. The Faculty subsidises these but the cost each year is dependent on airfare, location, and currency exchange rates. Below are the upper end of expected costs based on where students have currently done placements.

Ym Mhrifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant, mae ein cwrs Cadwraeth a Rheolaeth Amgylcheddol wedi’i gynllunio i roi i chi’r wybodaeth a’r sgiliau sydd eu hangen i fynd i’r afael â’r heriau hyn.     Rydym yn adolygu ein darpariaeth cyfrwng Cymraeg yn gyson a bydd union  argaeledd modylau yn amodol ar argaeledd a diddordebau ymchwil staff, pynciau astudio newydd, amserlennu a’r galw gan fyfyrwyr. Os yw eich cwrs yn cynnig modylau trwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg gall y math o fodwl amrywio o flwyddyn i flwyddyn ac fe fydd yn amodol ar gyrraedd isafswm nifer myfyrwyr.     English language requirements   

    If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

    For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.   

    International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship.

  • We believe that course content should involve the combined consideration of academic and vocational intent for students to develop a skill and knowledge set which is fit for the workplace. 

    Hence, this MSc was designed with environmental managers and applies current ‘live’ assessments/events to keep the content responsive to the ever-changing needs of employers, their employees, and the ever-changing environmental agenda. 

    This teaching style involves, reports, projects, presentations, and help students develop their individual interests within the module’s framework.

    Also, the dissertation is developed by students in collaboration with the supervisory team, and it is believed it should be directly relevant to the student’s interests while still complying with the academic rigour of MSc research.

    Finally, the teaching team are completely student-centred and believe in facilitating students in achieving their environmental management ambitions.

  • Some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.   

    If you choose to study your course either fully or partially through the medium of Welsh, you may be eligible to apply for scholarships and bursaries to support you with your studies.

What you will learn

Our part-time MSc in Environmental Conservation and Management is built on a foundation of practical, real-world experience and critical analysis. Our teaching approach encourages you to engage directly with environmental issues, applying theoretical knowledge to hands-on projects and research to deepen your understanding and skills in conservation.

Year 1
In your first year, you will study foundational subjects in environmental conservation, such as ecology, biodiversity, and environmental impact assessment. You’ll gain insight into the ecological processes that sustain life on Earth and develop skills in assessing human impact on natural systems. Hands-on projects and fieldwork introduce essential conservation techniques and foster a practical understanding of environmental management principles.


Year 2
Year two focuses on advanced conservation methods and environmental policy analysis. You’ll delve deeper into managing ecosystems, wildlife, and habitats, with an emphasis on sustainable resource use and the influence of global policy on local conservation practices. Applied research and live case studies allow you to work on real-world issues, helping you refine your expertise and apply your skills effectively.

Year 3

    English language requirements   

    If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

    If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.   

    For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.   

    International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship.

  • We believe that course content should involve the combined consideration of academic and vocational intent for students to develop a skill and knowledge set which is fit for the workplace. 

    Hence, this MSc was designed with environmental managers and applies current ‘live’ assessments/events to keep the content responsive to the ever-changing needs of employers, their employees, and the ever-changing environmental agenda. 

    This teaching style involves, reports, projects, presentations, and help students develop their individual interests within the module’s framework.

    Also, the dissertation is developed by students in collaboration with the supervisory team, and it is believed it should be directly relevant to the student’s interests while still complying with the academic rigour of MSc research. Finally, the teaching team are completely student-centred and believe in facilitating students in achieving their environmental management ambitions.

  • Some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.   

    If you choose to study your course either fully or partially through the medium of Welsh, you may be eligible to apply for scholarships and bursaries to support you with your studies.

  • Mae’r rhaglen yn defnyddio ystod eang o dechnegau asesu, gyda’r nod o greu haneswyr sydd â set sgiliau a gwybodaeth amlochrog.   • Mae’r Gyfadran wedi gwneud amcangyfrif gan dybio y bydd myfyrwyr yn prynu copïau newydd o’r llyfrau.  Gallai myfyrwyr hefyd ddewis gwario arian ar argraffu fersiynau drafft o’u gwaith.

    • Gallai myfyrwyr wario hyd at £300 y flwyddyn ar lyfrau a deunyddiau ychwanegol cysylltiedig.
    • Disgwylir i fyfyrwyr gyflwyno 2 gopi caled o’u prosiect terfynol, ac amcangyfrifir y bydd cost rhwymo’r rhain yn £20.

  • Mae’r MA Astudiaethau Hanesyddol yn cyfoethogi cyflogadwyedd myfyrwyr drwy gynnig iddynt wybodaeth fanwl am hanes ac am berthnasedd pobl, digwyddiadau a ffenomena hanesyddol i gymdeithas, gwleidyddiaeth a diwylliant cyfoes.  Mae’n datblygu sgiliau meddwl beirniadol myfyrwyr a’u dealltwriaeth o faterion moesegol, yn arbennig o ran gwleidyddiaeth cofnodi a choffáu’r gorffennol.  Mae’n cyfoethogi sgiliau cyfathrebu myfyrwyr, ar lafar ac yn ysgrifenedig.

Many modules focus on the narrative and representation of history. This includes learning how stories from the past are portrayed in media representations of history, such as films, museums, memorials, and online platforms. This approach to historical research lets you study how historical narratives can be created, questioned, or contested across different settings and cultures.

With modules that cover chronological history from Ancient to Modern periods, you’ll be able to study a range of time periods and topics in depth. You’ll also gain methodological skills in history, learning how historians study the past using different approaches and techniques. What you will learn

Our MA in Historical Studies embraces a research-led, student-centred approach. We aim to develop advanced historical research and analytical skills through a deep exploration of historical themes, topics, and eras. Students gain both methodological skills and a critical understanding of how history is narrated, represented, and contested in various forms.

Year 1

In the first year, students explore historical themes and topics that shape our understanding of the past, with an emphasis on methodological skills in history. Modules provide a comprehensive overview of historical research and guide students in examining how history has been represented in media such as film, literature, and public memorials. This foundation prepares students for advanced, specialised work, giving them the tools to interpret and question how historical narratives are constructed and communicated.

Year 2

In the second year, students select module aligned with their specific interests. 
The programme culminates in a dissertation, where students apply their research skills in history to develop an original project on a chosen topic. Students gain confidence in historical research, critical analysis, and argumentation, preparing them for careers in academia, heritage, and beyond.

  • The programme draws upon a wide range of assessment techniques, which aim to produce historians with a multifaceted set of skills and knowledge. Modules concentrate in particular on essay-writing, but also include the following assessments: book reviews; reflective journals; posters; group and individual presentations, web programming and design exercise; source commentaries and film analyses.

    The core assessment is the final 15,000-word dissertation. The dissertation places a premium on originality and independent research. To equip students with the necessary knowledge and techniques for dissertation work, they are required to take a research methodology module early in their degree. This grounds students with the essential skills that are then finessed in other modules, culminating with the dissertation itself.

  • Students may spend up to £300 per year on books and additional related materials.

  • This programme is ideal for those who want to learn more about the past, but there are also some more practical module choices to help students improve their job prospects. Many of the students who undertake the course on a part-time basis are already in employment and wish to gain a postgraduate qualification as a possible means to promotion or change of job role. Former students include journalists, writers, storytellers, teachers, lecturers, editors and people who work in the tourist or heritage industries.
