Background

Before coming to UWTSD, Dr Jeremy Smith was a Lecturer in History at University of Exeter, a Senior Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Chester, moving to UWTSD/ Lampeter in 2008 as Head of the School of Archaeology, History and Anthropology. 

Specialist Subjects

  • Modern British and European History since late Eighteenth Century; the history of Home Rule in Ireland since 1880s, the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and politics of the Right since the 1880s.

Professional and/or Research Experience

Dr Smith has written four books in addition to numerous articles and chapters. Books include Taming Democracy: A History of the Conservative Party, 1880-1924, for UoW press; Britain and Ireland: From Home Rule to Independence, 1867-1921 for Longman Seminar Studies series, and The Tories and Ireland: Conservative Party Politics and the Home Rule Crisis, 1910-1914, for the Irish Academic Press. His last book, for Pearson, was on Making the Peace in Ireland: A History of the Peace Process, an attempt to place the dynamics of peacebuilding in Northern Ireland within a longer historical context.
