Background

Dr Seena Joseph brings more than 20 years of academic and professional experience in Information Technology and Computer Science. Having lectured at universities in South Africa and now in the United Kingdom, she brings a global perspective to computing, research, and student engagement. 

She holds an MTech and a PhD in Information Technology from Durban University of Technology, South Africa. 

Her research spans Artificial Intelligence (AI), including machine and deep learning, with applications in natural language processing, image processing, and computer vision. She also explores AI in cybersecurity. In parallel, her robotics research focuses on soft exoskeleton systems with a particular interest in clinical solutions for assistive technologies. 

Her research-led teaching informs her contributions across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, where she integrates technology-enhanced practices and current academic and professional standards to support student learning and engagement.

Professional and/or Research Experience

Dr Seena Joseph has over two decades of experience in Information Technology and Computer Science, combining academic teaching with applied research expertise. She has held lecturing roles in South Africa and the UK, contributing to curriculum development, postgraduate supervision, and interdisciplinary research.

Her research spans artificial intelligence, including machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and image processing, as well as soft exoskeleton robotics for clinical rehabilitation and assistive technologies. At UWTSD, she leads research projects with national and international partners and serves on the Doctoral and Ethics Committee. She mentors postgraduate students in research, conference participation, and publication, ensuring the translation of research into practical and societal impact.
