Title: Optimising Bespoke Helmet Design for Children with Neurological Conditions
Research Area: Reality Capture, 3D Modelling and Virtual Simulation / 3D Printing and Prototyping
Partner: Cerebra and the Cerebra Innovation Centre (CIC)

Project outline
Energist Ltd, a global leader in nitrogen plasma technology, The Cerebra Innovation Centre (CIC), part of the national charity Cerebra, designs bespoke products to support children with complex neurological conditions—especially when commercial solutions fall short. One such innovation was a custom-fit helmet for horse riding therapy. While effective, the original process relied on costly 3D scanning equipment and required two specialists to visit each child’s home, limiting the number of families CIC could support.
ATiC’s Contribution:
ATiC collaborated with CIC to streamline and democratise the helmet design process. The team developed a cost-effective toolkit that enables parents and carers to capture accurate head measurements using everyday devices like smartphones.
ATiC’s expertise:
- Reimagined the process to improve accessibility and reduce costs, expanding reach to more families.
- Developed a remote data capture method using non-specialist equipment.
- Assessed the accuracy and usability of various non-contact scanning techniques.
Impact:
This partnership transformed a labour-intensive service into a scalable, user-friendly solution—empowering more families to access tailored support.
