Our Facilities
The greenery of our Carmarthen campus provides an impressive backdrop to your English and Creative Writing studies.
The campus boasts scenic grounds, featuring a river, gardens, and wildlife walks. This scenic environment is rich in culture and inspiration, from our modern library to a myriad of talks and events.
The region’s literary heritage is profoundly influential, particularly the legacy of renowned 20th-century poet Dylan Thomas, known for his vivid, lyrical works. The landscapes and culture that inspired Thomas continue to inspire contemporary writers, fostering a rich tradition of evocative poetry and prose.
Our Facilities Include
Our English and Creative Writing Facilities
At the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), we offer a unique and enriching learning environment that prioritises small, bespoke teaching classrooms, allowing for personalised support and peer collaboration.
Our students have access to a range of IT equipment and the extensive resources of the Carmarthen campus library. We also provide opportunities for international travel and studies, enhancing the global perspective of our students.
Visits, Visitors and Literary Events
At UWTSD, we are dedicated to providing a comprehensive and supportive educational experience that prepares students for their future careers. Our programmes are enriched with visits to theatrical events, guest speakers and interactions with literary agents.
These experiences offer insights into professional careers and practical feedback on student work. Student-organised showcases allow for practical application of their skills.
An excellent example of this active application of creative skills was when students, as part of the ‘The Art of the Pitch element of their course, organised their own showcase: ‘Confessions of Creative Minds.’
Here as some examples of past opportunities and experiences:
-
Students attended a rehearsed reading of a new verbatim play, ‘Aurora Borealis’, directed by Dr Ian Rowlands, followed by a Q&A session with the creative professionals involved.
-
Dr Carly Holmes, a successful novelist and also an editor at Parthian Press, came in to talk to students about her career and how they might break into the business. She studied at UWTSD from undergraduate all the way to PhD.
-
Students also benefit from visits by, and online interactions with, literary agents. During a Zoom call with London agent Emily Macdonald, of 42 Management & Production, students had a chance to try out their novel pitches and receive genuine professional feedback.
-
The students had a visit from Christopher Fisher – writer and organiser of The Llandeilo Literary Festival. As a direct result of this, students were able to run their own Creative Writing Open Mic / Workshop at the festival, (and receive free entry!).
Research Resources
The university’s former campus in Lampeter is home to the Roderic Bowen Archives, one of the principal resources for academic research in Wales. Acquired over the past 200 years, the Special Collections of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, include more than 35,000 printed works, eight medieval manuscripts, around 100 post medieval manuscripts, and 69 incunabula. A copy of a book signed by Jane Austen is one of the many treasured items.
Students are still able to access the archives despite teaching now being based on our Carmarthen campus only.
