Project outline

Project outline
ITERATE Design and Innovation Ltd was commissioned to develop a bespoke motor-driven arm support system for a client with lifelong mobility challenges. Although undiagnosed, the client had experienced severe muscle wastage and had limited arm movement, making everyday tasks difficult or impossible.
The project aimed to use this individual as an “extreme user” case study to design and evaluate a proof-of-principle prototype. The long-term goal: to create a commercially viable product that could support individuals with muscular dystrophy and similar conditions.
ATiC’s Contribution:
ATiC played a key role in validating the design and ensuring the system was not only functional but also comfortable for daily use—enabling tasks such as feeding and brushing teeth through independent control of utensils.
ATiC’s expertise:
- Provided usability and ergonomic design evaluation.
- Supported 3D printing of early prototypes developed by ITERATE.
- Conducted 3D scanning, motion capture, and dynamic testing with the client to refine the system.
Impact:
This collaboration resulted in a highly personalised assistive device that enhances quality of life and demonstrates the power of inclusive, user-centred design.
